I saw Yes perform twice this past week on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. On the night of their first performance the ship was really swaying back and forth quite a lot. Steve Howe's lap steel was on rollers or very slick feet and would often go sliding left and right when he wasn't playing it, sometimes as much as 3 or 4 feet. It would slide way far stage right until it hit a stack of speakers or it would slide to the left until it hit a guitar mounted to a stand. It was kind of comical to watch. Around the 30 second mark at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNrPdvgVP6c you can see the thing tries to slide right out from under him while he is actually playing it. This kept on all night. I don't know why he or a tech didn't go put something around one of the legs to keep it under control. Later in the week during a Q&A session Chris Squire joked that the guitar sliding around on stage made it easier to play. Wink

My wife and I with Chris Squire that week in The Cayman Islands. The whole thing was a blast.

No, I didn't meet the whole band but pretty much all of the artists were around and mingling all week. We would be up on deck and John Wetton would be strolling by. I was in the buffet line one morning and Steve Hacket was in line. We sat down in the theater to watch U.K. perform and noticed that all of Yes were 2 rows behind us. I got on a bus in The Cayman Islands to return to the ship, sat down and noticed Chris Squire was right behind me. We were sitting at breakfast one morning and Steve Howe and Roger Dean were a couple tables over. I was standing on deck one afternoon with my friend watching Steve Hacket perform and we were discussing the shows later in the day and neither of us were sure what time the Glass Hammer show was. As we were both fumbling around in our pockets looking for a schedule I noticed that Steve Babb (their bass player) was about 10 feet away, so I asked him. It was just kind of weird.

During one of the Q&A sessions Alan White mentioned that the band had concerns about being on the ship and that people would never leave them alone and that they considered trying to figure out a way to just stay in hiding all week, but decided against that. He commented that he was really glad that they didn't do that and that just hanging out with everyone all week had been a great experience. Rock musicians of their success level aren't generally known for just hanging out for extended periods with fans like that. Being trapped on a ship changes some of that. I think they were pleasantly surprised at how it went.

Quite honestly, at this stage in their careers they don't have to worry about screaming teenagers. The people who could afford a cruise such as this are most likely the people who are going to be respectful to them in a public setting.

I could imagine somebody getting drunk and disorderly, but not starting a fight or anything like that.

It sounds like a really fun time for both the audience and bands.
