Tune of the Month November?

I'd be interested in considering another tune this month if others want to. Perhaps holiday songs for this month and next? (I'd argue there are some great ones.)

I like White Christmas or Mike Neer has Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas tabbed out in his blog from a year or two ago. (It's challenging but it's fun.)

Just suggestions. Other ideas? I know life gets busy (I'm a dad) but things like this help motivate me to keep learning new material a priority too! No sin in setting out a session either.

I'm in for a christmas song. My favorite is "Christmas song" by Alvin and the Chipmunks : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hAUWyp0qzs

But whatever is decided, I'll be in!

How about any Christmas song for November/December? I have several already recorded so I'm covered... ;-)

Dan, I'd be okay with that! Unexpected yet familiar.

Doug, are you proposing assigning a single xmas song for both Nov and Dec together?

I was not thinking of assigning any particular song. I was thinking that any Christmas song would do, and any number of songs a member wants to submit between now and Christmas... just my opinion.

I was thinking this exact same thing just a couple days ago -- that the "Tune of the Month" for November / December could be ANY CHRISTMAS SONG YOU CHOOSE.

Personally, I would LOVE for someone to come up with a Leavitt arrangement of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"

Perfect! Great idea. Let's say until Dec. 31 submit any Christmas song. Sound good?

Sounds good to me.

Great! I'm working on my one lap steel arrangement for "Christmas song" by the Chipmunks, hope to get it done by the end of the month.

I would have like a video of this one to see what kind of positions you use. Is this a song from your song book?

Good to see that some of the songs were already recorded so this thread could start rapidly. I like the fact that it's one take and not a edit.[/quote]

Here's a take of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" I recorded last year, using the Leavitt tuning on my RJL, based loosely on Mike Ihde's tab, with a backing track done on BIAB.

And here's me struggling through "White Christmas" on my Blue Star Lapmaster 8 string tuned to A6/F#7 with another BIAB track.

I'm enjoying all of the songs here. It's nice to hear the different styles and versions of these classic tunes.

Dan, yes, my recording of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is from my second lap steel song book, "25 More". C6 tuning, 6 strings, key of Am. Much of it involves the open strings in combination with some "barred" strings. Open string patterns work well in the key of Am (on C6 tuning) since "C6" is also "Am7"... same 4 notes in each chord.

Ok, here is my arrangement of "Christmas song" by Alvin and the Chipmunks :

http://soundcloud.com/dagniel/christmas ... in-and-the

The tuning is A7/C6 on a 8-strings and I play in the key of F so I can use open strings. At the end, I use only natural harmonics.

I'm not sure I like it so please tell me what you think about it.

Here's my version of "Silent Night" played on a 1926 Weissenborn:

Actually it's an old Austrian Carol, but to me sounds like an old Hawaiian Slack Key Tune ;-)

i'm gonna slide in for this one - i havent touched the steel since june (gasp!) due to all the other musical projects i had going on eating up my steel fun - i found out, as jerry byrd said, the steel is not a part time instrument!

i'll be rusty but hoping to get it kicked in again...

OK then, here is a classic Christmas song from Alabama, Christmas in Dixie. This is my first ever Christmas song on steel guitar since I started playing on May 20th. Thanks for letting me join in the fun!

Tossing in another White Christmas. Not super polished but I gave it a go with two heads and a improv section in the middle. Nothing great but hopefully not too painful either:
