| I also wondered, so I picked up a Rickenbacker Ace some time ago. I found the sound and sustain characteristics to be the same as a B6. The biggest difference was the top to back dimension was around one inch, making it very light weight. Perfect for the youngster going off to lessons, and us old guys who don't want to carry anything heavy. |

I haven't heard one. Nice to hear it has a nice bakelite sound.
I agree about the age versus weight issue Ron !!
I've more or less switched to my frypan, unless I feel strong occasionally !  |

Great guitars. MUCH lighter than a B6 and very good sound. One piece construction so the neck is not a bolt on.

| Not painted bakelite, but colored bakelite. Brown, blue, red, white. Not that much lighter than a B6, really, but equally great sounding guitars. I gig with one every week. |

Actually they are all covered in some sort of opaque top coat ... even the brown ones.
I used one of my brown Academys as the "mother" in my first sand casting. I used Petrobond ... an oiled sand.
When I removed the Academy after packing the sand ... some of the top coat had pealed off ... exposing a very attractive brown/black swirl.
I used xylene and alot of elbow grease to remove the remaining top coat.
It's now the most attractive Ace/Academy I have ...
My blue Ace is a real looker though ...  |
