Never mind that this holds true for a brand new guitar, but especially true for older axes.
My Lamar S/10 had some issues with the changer. Actually I did not know what was causing the A pedal to behave so sluggishly.

Lamar has been nothing but helpful on the phone- advising me on a suggested fix.
Still a problem for me:
1) I am not comfortable taking apart the changer
2) as well meaning as the advice was, it would really be necessary to examine the guitar first hand to make a proper assessment- which Lamar told me.
The other day I was reading a post and noticed a post about set-ups by john widgren- who lives in my vicinity.
I called him and made an appointment.
He did an amazing job.
Lamar's fix was indeed part of what the guitar needed-but the other work John performed made it like a brand new guitar- except with a finer adjustment on pedals and levers.

I played her last night and was pleased- I'll need more "alone time" to get to the real fine points- I know if I want a little play added back in ( John cleaned up a lot of slop in the mechanisms) he'll be glad to do it as part of the set up.

Next new guitar I buy goes strait to John to do a set up.
And now I need to have him do my other axes.....

John Widgren is an expert steel guitar mechanic. He doesn't THINK he knows, he KNOWS.

Come on guys, a pedal steel is a very simple mechanical device, jeezuz, adjusting the brakes on a bicycle is more difficult than setting up a steel.

To Dave and all who have so kindly expressed words of support; My sincere and heartfelt thanks. My 35 years of experience is brought to bear on every project I take on. I work on every guitar with attentiveness as though it were my own. I don't re-invent the wheel, I stay within conservative parameters of original designs..optimized and precision set up for playability.

In the meantime I'll keep my eye out for the Richard Burton model Steel guitar, and will provide free precision set ups to the first 100 buyers.
