I was given a couple of Monster speaker cables with 1/4'' plugs. Would someone be kind enough to tell me the difference between speaker cable and instrument cable. They both look to be same in appearance. Thanks. Jr. Watts Confused

Sure Jr...Speaker cables have 2 separate insulated conductor wires, and instrument cables have one insulated conductor wire and a braided shield around it.Usually the speaker wires are a thicker gauge that the instrument cables...Slim

Hi Slim. Thanks for your reply. I will try them out for guitar to pedal and pedal to amp when I get my
Sierra set back up. They are new cables so I was wanting to use them if I could.

Speaker cables are NOT shielded. Do NOT use them for instrument cables. They will allow electrical interference to be picked up and you will most likely have some noise from them.

Also, NEVER use instrument cables for speaker cables.

There is a reason the cables are not the same.

Many thanks Richard. I had not thought about the shielding. If you read my post (Don't try this) you will see how dumb. If it was an old Cummins diesel I would know more about it. Thanks again Jr. Watts.

My son has a Marshall mini stack in his bedroom, the cables from the amp head to the cabs are just stereo cables with 1/4 plugs, He misplaced all of his patch cords (teenager) and tried to use one of them as a patch cable for his guitar, man you talk about racket, I though I was hearing a Detroit diesel with the Jake brake flipped on at about 45000 RPM's Laughing

He could use a Cummins or Cat for a generator and really put out some power????? I also read somewhere that one end of your cable is better at the amp and one is better at the guitar. It has something to do w/the way they intsall the wiring to make up the cable????

Dan I think that goes along with plugging into the bottom plug in the wall, as gravity forces more electrons there.
