We again had the pleasure of hearing Rick Price playing last night with Jake Hooker and the Outsiders, and late in the evening Rick launched into Faron Young's "Give A Lonely Heart A home" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjPf9fpQMXw What an intro!
As Jake's band consists of Rick, Jake on upright bass, Jess Meadors on fiddle, and John Jenkins on drums, Rick plays on every song, as lead and fills in. He absolutely is a star.

Glad to hear that Rick is still picking at a high level. Loved his work with Johnny Bush, but we don't get to hear him out west.

awesome and very underrated player. and, as stated earlier, a very nice guy. i love the tone he gets from that green laquer push pull!

One of my favorite players as well. Got to hear him a few years ago at the Stagecoach in Ft Worth with Jake. Crystal clear tone to die for, tasty fills, and knocked out rides. He was playing thru an Evans and a NVille 400 both turned to 10!!!! At break I went up and visited and we talked steel for 20 minutes like he's known me forever.

I had the great pleasure of Rick Price sitting in on my guitar at Pearl's just a few months back.For someone not knowing my setup,Rick knocked it outta the park.He is also a super nice guy.

I agree with others here - I think Rick is underrated and also underexposed. A player of his caliber deserves more.

Other than maybe doing more studio work, Rick stays very busy with the Jake Hooker gigs (playing at a minimum every Fri&Sat night). And everyone who hears him knows they just heard one of the best.

Rick Price is the man as far as I concerened, very tasteful player with tone to die for.

When I met him I was a teenage beginner and probably worried him to death with quesitons over the course of the day I hung with him in my hometown. He was there with Johnny Bush. A long time ago.... He had lots of hair and played a white MSA. But said he had a new Emmons coming as soon as he got back to Texas from the road trip. He was very nice to me.

I'm surprised at how rarely this happens. There are a lot of steelers who know how to "expand their space", so to speak. Jim Loessberg did that for a while, if I remember right. It's my guess that the writers of songs and frontmen predominantly use a six-string, and they can't get used to the idea that it's not a necessity. On a lot of newer music there are just way too many instruments & tracks used to let the music breathe, and ebb & flow. Of course you need a click track to synchronize four rhythm guitar parts; but you don't need four rhythm guitar parts!

Excellent point David, New music is produced with every single nook and crannie filled with something so the end result is like a solid block, and about as interesting. Kind of like the difference between looking at the grand canyon and a paved parking lot. MANY Texas based traditional bands feature a stripped down lineup so that guys like Rick Price can really show their stuff. That usually requires the omission of guitar players since so many of them can't seem to stay out of the way or play the music authentically. (we are sticklers about that down here) But, back to the subject, Rick is one of my favorite players in the world and one of my very best friends. He's been an inspiration and a huge help to me. He rebuilt my old push/pull and it is now, very simply, the best Emmons guitar on the planet. Just ask him about it! haha!

Everytime I get to see Rick, although he doesn't know me much, it is like he has known me for years! What a nice guy! My wife and I try to catch Jake Hooker whenever he is around the area here, and we like to dance, but it is hard when we are dancing and I am trying to watch Rick! It is a great atmosphere....Clean, clear, crisp music!

Just goes to show you that some of the older players are really classy individuals/musicians....

His music is REFRESHING!!

I just recently saw him on Tru Country TV show.
He was just great - out front on lead & fills.
I would love to see him playing in person some day
but this old work every day thing keeps getting in the
way of my fun & hobbies!

A great steel player, indeed! I still savor the licks I copied off the Johnny Bush live album. Rick plays some of the best all around commercial E9th playing I've ever heard on that album, in my opinion!

That's one of those records that if you learned all the steel licks on there,you could get a gig immediately!

I've never met Rick, but I do have several of Jake's CD's and hope to catch him and Rick in person again someday soon.

I got to know Rick & spent time with him at his parents in Lewiston, New York...He taught me alot & we hung out quite a bit when he was around....he is a great guy...I bought a push pull Emmons from him & remember driving to his place getting it...so excited...I was 21 at the time...Man where did the years go...Sure would be great to see him again....He's a class guy & great player.... www.myspace.com/peeweecharles
