I'm planning to ship an Emmons LeGrande D-10 to a customer in Melbourne, Australia pretty soon and wondered if any of you folks have had any experence in shipping guitars from the USA to that part of the world. I know it will be expensive, so I'm just now sorting things out, to see what the best bang for the buck would be. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have. _________________ Best regards,

Lynn, I just shipped a pedal steel to Norway from London Ontario.
I took the steel out to our local airport and sent it with Air Canada Cargo. The buyer will clear the steel thru customs at the airport and take it home from there.
This turned out to be about twice as reasonable as sending with FedEx, UPS and the like. The only difference is that the customer don't get it to his door.
Another big thing in my mind is that there is less chance of damage this way. They told me that it is handled by hand here, packed into a container in Toronto and then taken out of the container in Oslo. All hand work, no conveyor belts to drop off of.
Two good things here: Half the price and gentler handling. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Lynn,
The cheap way to ship it is LCL: less than container load. This method you pay by size, not weight, and it is very cheap...but it goes by ship, not air. I would expect 1 - 2 months to Australia, could be longer. You will need to fill out some sort of customs declaration, but the purchaser is responsible for any customs fees and duty, and should have researched this before agreeing to buy an instrument.
If you search LCL USA to Australia, or just LCL shipping, you will find sites that provide information and quotes. You will need the dimensions of the package.
I would compare the prices of air shipping (in above post) to LCL via ship, then offer the buyer his choice if the LCL is significantly cheaper.

I shipped a steel to Switzerland thru USPS priority mail. It was dropped of in Kent, Ohio on a Friday at 1 pm and was delivered the following Wednesday, I was pleasantly surprised. The cost was 185.00. There is a weight limit of 70 lbs. Best of luck! |

Lynn, I have had four steels shipped to me in Australia and all came via air-freight. Three by Fedex (without any issues at all) and one by UPS - again no issues.
Easiest for the purchaser is for you to freight the steel "door to door", which means the courier for the freight company will need a delivery address. Every steel I have had freighted has been fully-insured...this is a must!
Your purchaser will have to pay Customs fees, any import taxes and Australian GST before he can take delivery. Get a mobile (i.e. cell) phone number for the purchaser and make sure it is on the freight documents (and the box the steel is packed in) so the freight company or clearing agents can contact him for payment of fees etc.
First couple of times I used a customs clearing agent here in Australia to do the clearance for me, but after a while I got used to the procedures so I just handled it all myself. The freight companies here have departments to do their clearances and they will contact the purchaser via phone once the item is received and in the bond-store.
The cost for this varies, but I budget about $1500Aus extra to cover air-freight, fees, quarantine inspection, GST etc. Over the past few years I have had a Carter D10, Mullen D10, Marlen D10 and Williams D10 freighted to me and no problems at all. Just make sure the paperwork and packaging has the contact details (address and cell-phone number) for the purchaser. Once it is in the wharehouse or bond-store in Australia, the people at this end will know what to do.
Hope this helps. PM me if you need to. _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. Here is one of my previous posts on this subject:
>>>Most of the previous post concentrate on the seller/despatcher. Please spare a thought for those at the other end. We are usually painfully aware of the costs both quoted and hidden involved.
As Paddy (Long) mentioned we 'in the outer galaxy' really need these items.
Just don't even dream of using FedEx (is obscene) and UPS is/are just plain "expensive".
Air freight is best and send to a reputable international warehouse. FedEx in Sydney (Au) just notify the recipient and tell you 'when you pay us $xxx we will release the item!' yes it is usually three figures - talk about being grabbed by the 'short and curlies'. You have NO options - just cough up whatever figure they pick.
Also there can be a delay in customs - I was personally 'phoned by them (customs) to explain what a LKL, LKV, LKR, RKR & and a RKL were as per the invoice! They had spent a day searching for these mysterious items and guess who paid for that?<<<
As you can see my experience/s may differ to Ned's. My last steel came air freight to Brisbane then door to door from Canada (at that time the dollar exchange rate for me was best that way) and it was done by Schenker Air Freight(google them they are world wide) and the costs totalled no more than $450 AU. By comparison I got a 12" speaker from Bobbe which cost abotu $100 plus $200 to get it here via UPS - I was not a happy chap.
Keep in mind that anything with wood in it has to be fumigated to get into Oz so it has to come right out and get the treatment - OK but I still am not buying a Sierra (no wood) !! Sorry!
A steel mate of mine had his Sierra come over via FedEx and it was in Sydney for months while he argued with them over the costs (a lot) - he lost! They had the goods and wouldn't release them without the cash.
If I sound a lot "tighter" than Ned with the dollars well I plead guilty but do get the machine over here and good luck. _________________ Priebs GFI ('09)Short-Uni10. GFI ('96)Short-Uni SD11. ('86)JEM U12

Lynn I responded to your email, not sure if you got it cos my first effort was bounced by your spam filter..??
BaxGLobal (Schenkers) was who I have used in the past and they were great, and relatively inexpensive - door to door as well, and they took care of all the customs documentation. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Hi Paddy,
Yes, I received your email...thanks very much for your input. I did call those folks but I would have to have an account and they will really not deal with someone like me that does not have an ongoing concern with overseas shipping. At least that's my take from our conversation.
Thanks to all for your input...I'm still in the process of sorting this out. _________________ Best regards,
