I've read about that record in a Hit Parader review back in 68. They had good taste. Anybody else read the magazine?

It must have been a thrill to play pedal steel in a recording session with Gram Parsons! GP wanted the steel players to go crazy on his records!

And that was just the beginning for JayDee. He's been pretty busy since then. He also has a couple of instructional DVD's. He talks with Jim Palenscar about his early experiences working with GP on that record as well as "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" on one of them. A Forum search will give you a lot on him as well.

You can find some examples of his work on YouTube by searching out "Maness steel" or "Desert Rose Band" etc.

And then try researching some guys named Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Hal Rugg, Weldon Myrick, Paul Franklin, Curly Chalker, Tom Brumley, Tommy White, or Doug Jernigan... just to name a few.

Thanks, Peter! I forgot to mention that it was 12 years ago that I discovered Gram Parsons. Since then, I have bought hundreds of classic country, Alt. Country, and Country-Rock CD's. I am familiar with all of those steel pickers, but Lloyd Green is probably my favorite out of those.

IMO, it doesn't get any better than Jay Dee Maness. I've had the pleasure of knowing him since the sixties when I was stationed in California. He helped me a lot in the days when you had to, IMO know someone to learn any licks. I wish that we had tablature then available like it is now, but IMO, he has always been a "great guy" and friend. Thanks for the memories Jay Dee.

I would also like to mention the fact that I couldn't help knowing about Doug Jernigan... He played on a gospel album that my grandfather sang on in the early 80's. I uploaded those songs to the Steel Guitar Forum. Look for a thread with Doug Jernigan's name in the subject line.
