Just got home from the Kansas show. Those who thought about coming then changed their minds shouldn't have. The show was really good, the food was really good and the hospitality was second to none. Ray and Elizabeth, and the entire staff go out of their way to make you feel like you are one of the family.
Scott Henderson was inducted into the Kansas Steel Hall Of Fame, and Ronnie Neighbors was presented the Pioneer award.
Thaks to all for a great weekend.

I was there... I also joined the membership... When Scotty Henderson took off on a ride my wife said to tighten our belts because he was going to blow our britches off. What a sound and energy that man has. If they put him and Joe Wright on the stage together it would be an event bigger than the scientific "Big Bang Theory". Everyone was so good I just lost track of time and didn't realize my butt and legs had gone numb during the day. I almost couldn't get up and the end of the evening. There was the best pickin I've heard at any of the 3 steels shows I've attended and that includes St. Louis... I think I have to give the tone award to Tim McCutchon.. He was playing thru an Evans like a few others but his was adjusted crisp but with a lot of body to the notes.

Rick, I have not heard Scotty, but yesterday I had the opportunity to hear Joe Wright at the NTSGA Nashville Jam, and he is an awesome talent. As you state, you better be holding on for the ride of your life...

Thank you Rick for the nice comment. I'd also like to thank the KSGA for having me back this year. I always have a wonderful time at this show. The backup band was outstanding and all the players were great. Ray and all the guys and gals really put on a great show as always. If you missed it, you really need to put in on your calender for next year. I made a lot of new friends and I can't wait til we can do it again.

Well... I don't really know where to start except for saying WOW!!!! What an awesome weekend!!!! I have never been so shocked in all my life. I want to say thank you so much to the entire KSGA staff for giving me such an absolutely phenominal honor. I never thought I would have been mentioned in the same sentence with people like Doyle and Jeff. I am still in shock. To Ray, Doug, Lee and everyone else involved thank you from the bottom of my heart. Words can't express my gratitude. I praise God for for the great brotherhood I have become a member of. I will charish you all forever.
Now..the pickin this weekend was fantastic!!!
First of all the back up band. Couldn't have done it without you and it makes it so much easier to play with the caliber of pickers that all of you are!!So to Jerry, Larry,Bob,John,& Duane And to John and Duane your awesome voices just made it that much better. Duane thanks for bringing Amy with you too! thank you so much for sharing your gift with us all. Tim put on two great sets that were out of the box and his playing was knocked out and as always great to see you friend. Dave Musgrave..you are such a great player and I love ya like a brother. Thanks for letting me pick with you. For those that don't know Dave, we have a living legend amongst us. Spend a few hours talking to Dave and you will find he was right in the middle of the early growth stages of our beloved instrument. You're awesome my friend! Curt S..your playing was great and your tone was to die and go to heaven for. Can't wait to see you again my buddy. and speaking of Kurt, it was so good to see my old friend Kurt Graber from Wichita. This was his first show and he played excellent. Good to see you my friend and keep in touch and come see me!!!! One of the reasons I love the KSGA show is I get to see old friends and catch up on hometown news. thanks buddy! A special thank you to Betty, Elizabeth, and all the lovely ladies who kept us fed this weekend. I'm gonna have another Hot Dog tonight in your honor!!!
Lavelle you sounded great my friend! It's coming back aon't it! Had a great time saturday night at the jam. Sure we woke up half of Baxter with our "Gang Licks" as Mr Hicks calls em! Fred Justice Awesome as always and hope I didn't jack up your set to much with my guitar playin. Talk to you soon.Hope you made it home ok and see ya soon. It was great to meet Cliff waterman and hear him play. Doyle shined with his pretty white Uni thanks for the great tunes. It's always great to see and hear my old friend Kieth Hilton.( no Kieth we appreciate you!!!) For those that dont know Kieth was the first person to take a chance on a young kid and published my first book. I will always be greatful. Sunday was a geat day with some of the finest pickers in the country. Jerry Roller, great sounds buddy. Ronnie neighbors love your need for speed son!!It was outstanding!!!Rob Parker you are an absolute prince. I love your voice, your passion for what you do, and most of all your friendship. You are a man among men. I love ya brother! To the Newberrys and Stewarts. Such good people and great players and lovers of our instruments. ALways a pleasure to be in your company. Mike Magee was absolutely awesome this weekend. He now owns John Hughy's old zum and plays it just beautifully. For what it's worth, I personally encourage you all to get his new CD, " All Loaded Up". His song selection and playing was perfect! I loved what you did on your Cd cover too. I thnk you for bearing your soul in words and music. You are such a great person and player.I want to say a special thank you to Dave Owens and family and Ronnie and Sherry Blecher. Thank you so much for traveling with me. You're more than friends your family. ( and ronnie really is hehehe) It was great to see all my friends like Jerry and Tina, Larry and Sharon,Jerry and Venda,Lonnie, and so many more.( happy 70th Jerry!!!) Of all the great playing I think the most special moment was a conversation I had with Lee Ogle. He told me how his son and a friend and were so enthrolled with steel guitar. I have spent many years being the "youngin" in the group and I know how vital it is that we introduce what we do to these kids. Someone has to carry a torch and they never will if we dont show them the flame. You're raising them right buddy. Dont stop doin what you're doin. To you I give my biggest thank you!
Joe Mcham you're such a special person and I owe you so much. I wish you could have been there too but I am so glad you're safe. It is indeed an honor being your friend. Last but certainly not least is a big thanks to my wife Teresa. No woman can support a man so much as you do. Only God knows how much I love and need you. I know I have missed some people and I am so sorry. You don't know what this weekend meant to me. (I'm still trying to figure it out myself!)Thank you so much. I will hold this honor in reverence and won't let you all down. I better quit before I blow up the forum with this post. See down the road yall!

The entire weekend was tremendous! In regards to Mike McGee, his playing was superb. I don't know how one can think of all those chords, let alone apply them. It amazes me. I just have to talk about the smoothness of Fred Justice's playing and the tone quality of every note. He just flowed from one beautiful chord to another with no break in continuity. Another player that I admire is Tim McCutchen. His playing of "I Love You So Much" was great and I still remember him playing "Danny Boy" a couple of years ago. So Good!. I think of Tim when I'm trying to play that song here at the house. Of course when I'm playing "Danny Boy" anywhere else my only thought is, "I hope I get this next note right". I'm especially impressed by my good friend Wayne Smith. I've always said when you want to hear a song played beautifully, Wayne can do it. The man sure knows chords and variations. I shouldn't have started naming people because there were so many great players! And how about that band! Larry Jackson must have a lot of strength and stamina to use all that energy hour after hour and never miss a beat. And Bob Dell, John Terry, and Dwayne Bowman really did a super job.
