From a jam band newsgroup:

-snip-
... that would be Gary Vogensen and Rusty Gauthier who insist on using the name "New Riders of the Purple Sage" when they
play at Rancho Nicasio, and Rancho Nicasio insists on billing them as
"the original New Riders of the Purple Sage" which they are NOT. These
guys played with McDuke just before he retired but they were not
members of the core unit, were not part of the scene in the 70s, and
certainly were not involved in creating or recording the tunes for
which NRPS are best known.

Look down the list a bit further in this grouping, and you will see an entry by J.B.Arnold on this very subject. I sent an e-mail to Buddy himself, which he was kind enough to answer. He is the main reason that I am going to see the band in less than 2 weeks outside of Philadelphia. You can have your question answered 2 ways....contact the club owner, then find out who he booked them through, or go to www.buddycage.net and send him an e-mail concerning that particular date.

Any Bobby Black gig would be cool with me!

'Not sure why they book it as NRPS (do you have the scoop on that Herman?), but it seems to have spun up a few in the jam band crowd.

I find it amusing that a band that stole its name (from the original Riders of the Purple Sage) is now complaining because some ex-members are performing as "the original New Riders of the Purple Sage".

A lot of people have flowed through that band over the years. I've seen more configurations than I care to enumerate. Seems that every gig they play has a different set of musicians.

I don't think they stole the name. I think Rusty purchased the rights to the name from Marmaduke just to keep it going because Marmaduke didn't want to do it any more. I think that's what Rob Bleestein told me ( my memory sucks!) Rob maintains the NRPS website and knows those guys from the original line up and probably has the real scoop.
I saw Rusty play with them in the early 1980s. It was Marmaduke, Rusty on fiddle, lap steel and guitar, and Allen Kemp(Rick Nelson)on guitar, and a no name rhthym section. Spencer Dryden was the drummer with the other band on the bill that night. They were called the Dinasours, featuring John Cippolina, Barry Melton from the Fish, and the the bass player from Big Brother, and Merle Saunders on keys.

"Changed thier format a bit its not all NRPS materal."

Did you happen to get the straight poop on if they will continue to bill themselves as the NRPS (in light of the format change, and the upcoming NRPS tour with David Nelson and Buddy Cage)?

Nobody should be complaining about the name, in any capacity, period.

The original Riders of the Purple Stage stole the name from the popular novel by Zane Grey.
