thats funny, i guess by now the heavy creased jeans have become his trademark to the point they are essential - kind of like willie's red bandana.

Nice! A steel man recognized for making a life on six strings. (Amd sometimes eight.)

And sometimes 10 or 20. If you listen carefully to some of the classic "Scene" tracks you'll hear him on pedal steel. An Emmons P/P back then. A D-10 Zum now.
The man is a joy to be around.

Thats great news -- and yes Howard your right, he does have a Zum ... when I picked up my new 2008 Hybrid from Bruce in Dallas, Mikes Black Zum was sitting right next to it ...and is the next sequential number.
Bruce had put Mikes name on the left front apron in Gold lettering too
And just to show I am not biased, I own a black MA6 myself hehe ....

Congratulations to Mike.....a true artist who can evoke the deepest emotions playing three notes instead of three hundred and the nicest human being you could ever meet......
I think that it's time for Mike to launch his own brand of jeans!.....forget the unstructured, wrinkled, gather at your ankles jeans.....forget the hanging below your crack homey jeans......no more fancy French sounding designer names for something that was made in Malaysia.......let's bring back style and class with......"STEEL CUT JEANS"......the slim boot cut creased jeans that will made you look like a million bucks...even after taxes!......
I'll take 8 pair.....34 x 32...extra sharp crease, please......
Howard...

If you get 15 pair you only have to do laundry every two weeks...that gives you more time to practice...

Dear Mike,
Congratulations! I can think of no one more deserving.
All the events that celebrate the National Heritage Fellows are wonderful, but the banquet is a real highlight. Enjoy!

Dobro Island was a favorite cut of mine as well. But the 8 String Swing album really blew me away. The only resonator work I've heard that rivals it has been Mike's subsequent work on 8 string resonators. Nobody else comes close. But not because I haven't tried.

He's an all time favorite of mine. In replacing LPs lost to ex-girlfriends through the years, just this weekend I picked up Mike's first solo record and the Scene's first! Way to go Mr Auldridge!!

I can't think or a nicer person than Mike, who would be more deserving to get the award.
So glad that there was a post about his steel playing which is just as flawless as what he does on the dobro.

Mike was the one who first inspired my journey with steel guitar. Thanks Mike and kudos for a well lived, well played life. I can't think of anyone more deserving of the NEA award.
I can think of one person equally deserving: Cindy Cashdollar.
