I just got an older GFI u12, and the vertical lever completely hangs down until it is parallel with the LKL (rather than being perpendicular like it is supposed to be). Does anyone have any pics of how the vertical is supposed to be attached?

GFI Lever

It sounds to me like your lever pivot bolt needs tightening so that the lever can just be moved with your hand and stays in that position. The lever should reside somewhere near to parallel with the floor (it usually sits about 10 - 20 degrees off parallel with the floor). There are stops to adjust this to suit the individual.
Don't confuse the lever pivot bolt with the main lever assembly pivot bearing - that is the one that you actually move/rotate with your leg/knee to actuate the string tension movement. The lever pivot bolt is there so the lever can be folded.
IMHO the vertical lever assemblies on the GFI's are about the only feature in this brand that could use a bit of a re-design but they work OK once adjusted and to be fair up levers need very "personal" adjustment.
