Tasty iced tea, delicious lemonade and a huge heapin' helpin' of "real country music", made up the menu for Sunday's latest WTSGA get together. Backed up by Larry Toliver on lead/rhythm guitar, Bobby Rountree on bass, and the recently retired Paul Polish on drums, Junior Knight and the Cox Contingent of Joan and Johnny Cox served up some of the best steel guitar entrees heard lately. What a show.
I didn't get the audience count but there were a lot of folks at the Ball Ranch assembly. There was even a couple from England in the audience. A special tribute by both Junior and the Cox's recognized our recent fallen brother steel players.
It was kinda like a super strawberry shortcake, capped with whip cream and topped off by one of the best cherrys in the Country Music World. One Curtis Potter entertained the audience, at Johnny Cox's request, for several minutes. There was also another couple who sang some good old country music songs. I lost their names, but I'm sure someone will post them for us.
Special thanks to Danny Letz, Duane Burns, and Larry Toliver for their efforts. Looks like with these 3 guys in the lead, this association is well on its way to success.
Dovie and I rode the Gold Wing down and back, suffered some minor sunburn, but more importantly someone stole our cameras out of the saddle bags at one of the rest stops. It's been reported and we are hoping they will be recovered. In short, no pictures unless recovery is made.
Special thanks to the Ball family for making the facilities available again. I think the next meeting is in October and we're looking forward to that. Plans are well underway for next years June spectacular. Stay tuned for the surprises from the three musketeers from WTSGA. Thanks guys.
Edited to add picture site after camera recovery:

Thanks for the kind words Fred....for awhile I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Three great Steel players in one afternoon....and three very nice people to go along with it.
I am so sorry to hear about the cameras.....Just once I would love to catch one of these DAMN thieves in action....I believe I could make him..or her think twice before they did it again !!! I hope they are caught.
Thanks again

Hey Fred,
Man....you are quite right about the afternoon! It was one of the highlights of the year for me. Super steelin' by Junior, Johnny & Joan, Paul Polish drummed his heart out, Bobby Rountree bassed it up well! And, they all said email them the dates of the Super Jamboree in June 06 and they would put it on the calendar! I'm excited! Next meeting is October 30th with Albert Talley and Randall Palmore! Be there and promote the West Texas Steel Guitar Association. See ya'll later.

Thanks to the WTSGA for allowing me to come out and pick a little. I had a GREAT time. JR , Joan and Johnny all picked fantastic. Sounded like Ms. Joan has been doing some wood-shedding since last I heard her pick. What a great job Joan. Jr and Johnny -- both of you where GREAT "as always".
And I certainaly CAN'T leave out Mr. Curtis Potter... "WOW" The man and his voice never ceases to amaze me.. He is "ONE OF THE GREATEST IN THE BUSINESS". Besides that - he's a pretty good guy, also.
Side note-- OK Curtis- was that laying it on heavy enough???? Checks in the mail--RIGHT??? HAHA!!!!
Looking forward to NEXT JUNE.....
Thanks again for having me.

Paul, you also sounded great on the drums but that is no surprise you always do. Everyone sounded great, a big thank you to all for a great afternoon of great country music. Fred i am so sorry about your camera's being stolen, as you know I live within a mile of these rest areas on I -20 and someone is always geting something stolen there. I hope you get them back but the chances are very slim. I took a picture of the steel players if you want me to send them to you. Thanks to all who performed and to the wtsga for a great job. Hope to see you all in St. Louis. |

Hey Doyle,
You did a great job with the cd. It sounded great. I can't believe you got that good of a sound live. Get ready for October, Albert Talley & Randall Palmore. It will be another good one! By the way, don't you have a Webb? Just picked one up. Maybe you can help with some settings.

Thanks Larry, I thought the cd sounded good too, but I have to give that credit to Deb,she has been taking the time to do that for us and make the cd's. I intended to bring the big equip and try to get a direct in but my back went out the week before, and yes I do have a Web that I play with a 75 peavy session 400, but after hearing Jr. and Johnny on those 112's and feeling the weight, I now have two 112's on the way.But I think those guys could sound good on anything they plugged into. And how about that Joan....wow...great picker. |

Let's see....two Nashville 112's....Uhh..one for you and one for me ????
You guys just can't imagine what it was like to play bass with Paul...What a great drummer...Johnny, Joan, Jr., and Larry were all great. I am so glad to have something like this going on close to home. I feel very lucky to have a small part in it. Thanks to all the people making it happen. |

Hey Bob Rountree!!!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed playing the bass for the West Texas Steel Guitar Association, and if you ever decide not to....I talked to Bob Tuttle, Bob Rains, and Curtis Potter....and they said they'd break both your arms & both legs if you quit!!! No, really, you make the show go over well and we do appreciate you. Be sure and let me know when you want to take your turn at the steel...and I'll play bass for you.
Later,

Wonders never cease. We've recovered our cameras and I've uploaded the pics we were able to save from them. You can clik on the site below for digital stuff. Our big camera suffered some damage but the film is in the developers and we will add them after development. Here's the site:

Enjoy these photos of a rising organization. I have to apologize for the texture and even then I'm thankful. Both cameras were underwater when the guy that took them threw them in a ditch when he tried to escape the long arm of the law. We edited those from the digital the best we could.

Glad you recovered your cameras Fred....great pictures! Looks like an event that any steel player would give almost anything to attend. Wish I was close enough.

Fred , the singers names are jay Hayhurst, and Margie Schumacher, we got their names but forgot where they were from, anyway we enjoyed their singing. I think most understand this forgetting thing, right??? Now what was that bass players name?? oh yeah, Bill Tree or something like that. |
