I just got a new Roland cube 80xl. When I bought it, I tried it out with my Melbert, sounds great. I plugged in my Magnatone Lyric last nite and at low volume it too sounded great. This morning, with the volume around 9 o'clock this hum showed up and by 10 o'clock it was a buzz that got louder as the knob was turned. The strange thing is that when it is switched to the outside neck there is a slight buzz that stays the same loudness as the knob is turned. With the switch on both necks or the inside neck the buzz is loud and ascending. I plugged in my Melbert,Morrell and my Strat, no buzz. Any ideas as to what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A slight correction, the outside neck buzz starts at about 12 o"clock and also gets louder as the knob is turned. At wide open volume tho,the buzz it is way less loud than the other 2 neck settings. I have been playing thru a Roland micro cube and at top volume there is a slight buzzing sound, hardly noticeable. Possibly because the Micro is battery powered?

My Mag Troubadour has a similar buzz happening as well when going into my MicroCube RX. Probably just a grounding situation which should be a easy fix.

So.. here is what I have; 2 brown [fabric type cover] wires and an uncovered wire coming from each pickup. Both of the brown wires from the outside neck, one becomes orange the other red, go to the neck switch. The 2 brown wires from the inside neck, one joins with the orange wire, the other and the 2 bare wires join up and become a green wire that goes to the volume pot.
I tugged on the bare wires [ground?] and they don't seem to be broken anywhere. All the joins are wrapped in what looks like masking tape with a waxy feel to it. Would it be safe to say that where those 2 bare wires join might potentially be the problem?

I'd seperate them and rewrap with electrical tape and see if that does the trick.

Under the tape is a soldered connection,it looked good. I ran a lead from the bridge to the join and it quieted the noise somewhat. So it could be a ground problem. I suspect the coated multi strand wire coming from the pickup may be the issue. Whatever it is is beyond my realm of expertise so I'll see if I can find someone local to look at it. If not I'll haul it south the next time I go. I taped the join tightly and now as long as I don't go over half volume on the guitar and amp there is no buzz.
Thanks for your help Ron, much appreciated.

You got more knowledge on these things than me, Paul, so I'm glad to hear your problem is solved. Now you can come over and fix mine! Laughing

Hmmm. Well, It did have a ground problem, the inside neck's ground to the bridge is now repaired. The buzz is still there but It doesn't start until 2 o'clock on the dial now. I suspect the switch, took the knob off and moved the shaft by hand,it feels a little crunchy in there on the middle and inside positions.
I know somewhat less than nothing about switches. Stewmac and Allparts and several others have rotary switches but they won't fit in the cavity. I looked at the Mouser site but I have no idea what any of that jargon means. Any body know where I might find an on-on-on shallow 3 position switch? A toggle would work but I'd like to keep it close to original.
