Not that I really need another steel guitar, but I always like to have some sort of shop project going on that I can work on at my leisure. This is basically a double neck version of the "experimental" steel that I built last year. I was so happy with the tone of that guitar, that I thought I'd see if I could build a D-8 console version.

It's a pretty conventional design, but I'm going more for tone and build simplicity than originality. I made the drawings for a 23" scale, although I haven't made the fretboards yet, and there's room to stretch it another half-inch if I want. It will have (black) Alumitone pickups, and gold hardware. Stringmaster type legs. I'm thinking I might bind the necks with either black or cream binding, depending on what I end up doing with the wood color.

Its still in the early stages, and I'm no luthier, so there are still a few dozen ways that I could screw it up, but hopefully, in a few weeks, I will have something more to show. Stay tuned...

Todd, you are my inspiration! A more sensible man would be saving his money to buy a real instrument like a Clinesmith, instead of embarking on this foolishness, but with limited funds, time on my hands, and an almost obsessive tendency to "do it myself" , this is the inevitable path… I'll probably be calling you for advice at some point.

The thing that I am finding most difficult about this project is planning ahead to keep all the steps organized, so that I don't do something that will complicate things later on. It's like solving a big puzzle. I am confident that this will be a very good sounding guitar, if I can get to the finish line with it.

I LIKE CONVENTIONAL, AND I LIKE SIMPLICITY. I ALSO LIKE YOUR DESIGN, I CAN VISULIZE A HIGH GLOSS BLACK, WITH ACCENTS. I ALSO LIKE THE THE SQUARE LOOK WITH THE SLIGHTLY ROUNDED CORNERS. I AGREE WITH DENNIS SMITH. ONE OTHER QUESTION IS THE STRING SPACING GOING TO BE THE SAME AT THE NUT AS THEY ARE AT THE BRIDGE? IT WOULD APPEAR SO, JUST WONDERING.

I do prefer parallel string spacing. However, this guitar will have a slight taper, a couple of millimeters. I had to narrow the keyhead a bit from the single neck design to keep the whole guitar from being too wide. It's already about as wide as a D-10 pedal steel.

I want to add that I do appreciate the feedback. Although I have a plan for how this is going to go, I'm not so far along that I couldn't pick up on someone else's good idea, especially regarding the finish and appearance. You probably can't tell from the photo and unfinished wood, but there's nice figured maple on the body, which I will certainly exploit. The necks are a harder, denser maple that isn't as pretty, so I haven't really decided what to do with them yet. The fretboards will be made to compliment whatever is underneath. Ideas are welcome!
