An internationally well known and highly respected Guitarist and Friend (of countless people) has contacted me with the request copied below. I informed him that the SGF would certainly be the place to ask, and that I would ask; He and I would deeply appreciate Fo'Bros help. I'm sure he'd appreciate any references to where audio recordings of 'best-ever' candidates versions could be acquired (tablature and / or video would be icing). You might want to mention why you think your candidate is 'best ever'; And certainly no harm in suggesting more than one:
HIS REQUEST:
Denny,..... I would like to get the "authentic"and "best ever" "gotta have" version of The Hawaiian Wedding Song (Ke Kali Nei Au) β with a good steel guitar band and singer singing in Hawaiian to study up on for my daughter's wedding. My brother in law [redacted] can play it on his 1930s Gibson Steel, and [redacted] who is playing the wedding can play it, and I believe a local girl that has played in my band could learn it β she's a great singer, very bright and fluid with languages, and could probably learn it in the right dialect. Any suggestions? Thanks, [redacted]
------------
Since the answers / candidates are likely a matter of personal taste and reasons; I have suggested that he monitor the responses here to make his choice from.

True!
For my taste, it doesn't get much better than Genoa Keawe and Gary Aiko, from the "Among My Hawaiian Souvenirs" album. It's true to the composition as written by Charles King, very Hawaiian in styling, with great voices and lots of lush steel guitar.
I also like the version as sung by George Kainapau and Bill Akamuhou Dias (yes, the soprano part is sung by a male). Like the Genoa Keawe recording, it is true to the original composition. Less steel guitar in this version, though. You can find it on the "Lei Of Stars" CD from Cord International.
Your friend will need a male singer as well as a female singer to perform it as the composer intended -- it was written as a duet. You can find the original sheet music in "King's Book Of Hawaiian Melodies" (the "Blue Book"). |

I have heard the Hawaiian Wedding Song performed by many Hawaiian singers, and the one that stands above all others is Nina Keali'iwahamana, the songbird of the Islands.
Hawaiian Wedding Song - The Hawaii Calls Collection album has Nina and Alfred Apaka singing the "Hawaiian Wedding Song" ("Ke Kali Nei Au). It does not get any better than this.
Nina also sings the song with Don Paison on Hawaii's Greatest Hits Vol 1
She sings it on the Jack De Mello album, Music of Hawai`i
She sings it with the Makaha Sons on Na Pua O Hawaii album.
I believe that she has recorded the Hawaiian Wedding Song more than any other performer. That should say something.
I have heard Nina also with her brother, Boyce Rodriquez doing a great job on the song, but that one was not recorded.
Here is a musical snippet
Just A Note: My daughter and I sang the Hawaiian Wedding Song at my youngest daughter's wedding. It turned out great. We used the regular sheet music, but we were very familiar with the song having lived in Hawaii for many years.
Aloha,
Don |

HO !...... The Internet cosmos didn't deliver SGF computer notifying me of Kekoa's and Don's replies after notifying me of Danny's. I just took a break from data-mining for the mission, and dropped in to tell Danny Thank You, and yee-hahhhh, got even more info from Kekoa and Don, right down the alley that was in my memory's ear without specifics when I started this quest (all over the internet like an ant crawling all over guava-jelly on Molokai sweet-bread!).
THANK YOU Danny, Kekoa and Don.
I found a couple versions on yewtoob, recorded in 1948, 1951, ...but a bit too noisy and amateurly copied to yewtoob to get a decent listen / opinion. My old computer literally bogged down to it's axles in Cord Intl's candy store; I'll have to go back after a fresh reboot!
With the enormous popularity of 'KKNA' / 'THWS', ...I would think there were many old authentic traditional Hawaiian, KamaAina and Hapa Haole versions recorded. But 'Best-Ever' is a pretty tall mission order, but a very pleasant venture !
I had thought and hoped that Nina and Auntie Genoa should / would have marvelous versions; That's what I vaguely heard in my mind anyway, along with Gabby; So THANK YOU for giving me those references I'll persue. The only downloadable tracks I found on the internet was at Cord; But now that you've provided specific artists and recordings, the search through ear candy land will be more fruitful.
If anyone knows where to find pay-for download sound files / tracks of said or moa 'no ka oi' cadidates, I'd SURE appreciate kokua, sources, leads, etc.
THANK YOU, _________________ Aloha,

Denny,
The iTunes Store has well over 200 different versions of the Hawaiian Wedding Song. You can preview 1-1/2 minutes of each song to determine which is the one you'd like best, then purchase the versions you'd like.
I'm sure the Amazon music store has a similar number available if you don't use iTunes.
Good luck on your search! _________________ Bradβs Page of Steel

Gentlemen,
THANK YOU so very much. Looks like you're zeroing right in on the mission objectives just as I had hoped and anticipated of SGF's excellence.
2nd cup of coffee this morning, ...VA IQ meds in my tummy, ...ash tray starting to feel good about it's existance / purpose, ...IQ slowly rising from the basement; But still a bit shy of attempting to join in thinking here this morning and giving adequate Thank You's (just got whacked by my high school english teacher's ruler again ..."yes ma'm mrs frazier, but it looks so goofy without the pa'a-strofy"... ).
------------
Hmmmmmmm..... case in point; It's almost noon here ...3PM PST ...microwave, wall clock and computer agree, ...and the SGF computer time stamps this posting as 9AM; I don't dare try to think! Ahhhh the challenges of my touch of asperger ! (Ouch ...just got whacked by my science teacher's ruler ! ). _________________ Aloha,

You can set the time to your own time zone in your Forum profile. For Hawaii, set it to "GMT - 10 hours". _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
