I have an older NV that began to hum loudly while on the job. Turned the reverb to 0,didn't help. Hit on top of cabinet and it didn't help. Then I unplugged the molex connector completely. No help. I can unplug my guitar completely, leaving nothing connected and it hums loudly constantly even with reverb disconnected. I think I had a 500 do this and it was the caps. But it could have been just because it popped when I turned it off. Can't remember. I haven't tried the cable between the jacks, but it seems that didn't help type problem before. Any suggestions before I send it to Peavey. Thanks, Ken Also, all controls are far left.

If it hums with nothing plugged in, its most likely an internal (power supply) problem.

Considering the age of most NV400's, power supply caps can be a problem.

Hi Ken, If it's a 60 cycle hum, it's most likely the
capacitors in the power suppy need to be replaced.

Humming loudly is one way a solid-state amp says "I'm sick!"... normally the output stage is hum-balanced... if one of the output transistors gets weak or opens up then you'll get big hum even when the caps are OK.

If your fuse is too big then your amp can be *very* sick and hum like this... with melting speakers happening too. The big clue is no sound from the guitar... if you can still hear your guitar in there then it's probably just filter caps.

Sounds like a tech visit is in your future soon.

Thanks Stephen. I can hear the guitar with hum when plugged in, so hopefully just caps. Ken
