I picked up a Fender Artist pro S-10 a while back. I seem to recall reading in an old post that it has a pickup made by Sho Bud but wired to Fender's specs, somewhere @13k, thus a thinner sound than the usual 17-19k single coil. Why, then, does it hit my amps so much hotter than my 17. something Truetone in my Fessy? I would have thought it would have the opposite effect.

On the one hand, it gives the axe a good vintage fender sound, a little inherent grit and growl along with a severely scooped out sound on the middle strings (5 and 6). On the other hand, it makes the guitar less versatile: fabulous for Bakersfield and honky tonk, less convincing more more modern country.

I've wonderered about the same thing. The pickups in my Fender 1000 are around 13k and the guitar is considerably louder than my Emmons or Fessenden which have pickups in the 16-17k range.

There are many factors that make the sound of a pickup. Just using the resistance numbers does not work. Think of it like a house. If somebody asked you how big your house was and you just told them 9 feet they would have no idea how big your house was. They could make assumptions about what the 9 feet referred to and have conversations with other people who made different assumptions about what the 9 feet referred to though. I've got to run down to Houston for a solo gig now. I'll put some details up later if nobody else does. Inductance is a biggie as is magnet strength when it comes to tone and volume.
