I saw a post where somebody was having trouble fitting an alumitone pickup into a LeGrande III. I wonder if the pickup mounting for LeGrande III requires a thinner pickup than the earlier all-pull Emmons?
Thanks-

Lynn,
I installed Alumitones in both a LeGrande and LeGrande II. It is a simple project. The necks must be removed and the changer axels must be removed on the LeGrande.
There is an aluminum spacer bolted to the top of the changer housing arms. The top 1/8" of these must be removed then, replaced. The Legrande II pillow blocks must be removed from the changer and 1/8" x 1" to 1-1/4" removed from part of the top of the pillow block arms'. These pillow blocks can be removed from the changer by gently tapping from the inside using an wooden dowel. The machining can be accomplished on a good band saw. All was completed without loosening or removing any pull rods. Any questions send an email.
Best regards, Jay Thompson

Jay- thanks for the info. I guess the term "simple" is relative! In other words, you cannot just bolt them in..Are they really that much thicker?
How do you like these pickups in an Emmons?

I was interested in putting and Alumitone on my old Emmons student. I contacted Lace, they sent a PDF drawing showing the height as .88". I believe a standard pup like a True tone is .75".

Lynn,
My LeGrande came with stock 17.5 Ohm pickups. These pickups were OK, but I had an SHO~BUD Pro II Custom
with the original Lawrence 705's and I had difficulty adjusting to the difference in sound of the two pickups. I have installed
Lawrence 710, TrueTones, and Tone aligners in this guitar searching for today's sound. The Legrande II came with
Emmons 108n, humbuckers, changed to TrueTones, back to humbuckers. I now have Alumitones in both guitars and
they are the best I have ever tried. Excellent balance across the strings, very responsive like a single coil, and QUIET.
It took some time to work up the courage to install these pickups, but once I started the process it was not difficult at all.

Installed one in my DIY lapsteel. Sounds marvellous.
Also into my ShoBud universal. I had an E-66 in there and was not happy with it.

The Alumitone has very high definition and reveals all bad right hand technique.

All in all it was worth it. The Alumitones are economic priced compared to others.

Did you install the toggle switch? It is not explicitly mentioned that they can, but you can have a single coil/ humbucker tone switch on them, although this is not technically what they are doing. The switch gives you another tonal balance.
