I'm interested in the 6 string models in the 6 to $800.00 range. What's your opinion.

Here is a clip of me playing my maple Beard Goldtone.
Looks great and great tone with good volume.

Get it from Beard or one of their distributors. These guitars will be set up in the Beard shop, a definite plus. Also, you may get full credit on a trade up to a guitar made in the Beard shop.

This hits on something I was just asking about in another thread (http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=224626)...

I understand that Beard is the expert, but can anyone weigh in specifically about how much of a difference a setup on a GoldTone by beard's shop makes?
In my case, being in canada, it looks as though I'd be saving $200-$300 by letting my local (respectable) shop do the initial setup...
I understand the various things involved in a setup of a standard roundneck guitar (acoustic or electric), but I'm less clear on what's involved in a squareneck reso setup...

thanks

They replace the cone and spider with their own... that's the major benefit. Nice tuners, etc... along with their own quality control (applied after China).

Some folks are just obtaining a Regal or GoldTone and replacing the cone and leveling the spider themselves. If you have a local shop you're working with that handles this then check their prices... you do pay premium for the Beard, but it does have their name on it. The difference between my Regal 6 and my GT-8 is pretty stark... no wolf-tone notes on the GT Beard, search around and you can find them on the Regal.

I'm confused. The Gold Tone is set up by Gold Tone or by Paul Beard. What setup are you referring to?

Adding to my confusion is the fact the retail price on guitar is the same from Gold Tone or from Beard.

Beard dealers also pay the same price as Gold Tone dealers.

I suppose there could be a difference in shipping, but....not $200.

This a dobro non sequitur Whoa!

I guess what I was saying was... I'm trying to decide between saving significant money and going with the GoldTone setup (which will be reviewed/tweaked by my shop if necessary) or the Beard setup.
I was completely unaware that the Beard setup involved substituting different parts (spider, cone, tuners)... that could be a game-changer for sure!

I was under the impression that the Gold Tone's all have Beard cones and spiders in them. I have heard that the ones set up at the Beard factory were better, but I have two, the solid Mahogany 6 string and the 8 string model, both were set up by Gold Tone and both sound great.

You are correct. The cone and spider are the same. The differences would be the nut, inserts, strings and the art of setup.

The differences may/may not be important to you. Very Happy

I was amazed by how good mine sounds since having it gone over by Beard, and it has been over a year. I never take it out and play it but that I get compliments about how good it sounds. It was money well spent in my opinion. Of course I had the Fishman/Douglas system installed at the same time and needed the adjustable bridge, so the setup basically went along with that, but everything was money very well spent.

Probably the best choice for a new sub-$1000 instrument I've heard. I see many discussions on ResoHangout that the Appalachian and Red Line resophonic guitars are better and made in America, but they both cost more than $1000. Unless you're lucky enough to find a good used resonator guitar, I'd go for one of these.
