C9 or Gmi with C on bass

C9(b7 9) Used as a substitute for a 4m (Gm)

C9th sub for 4 minor ,as writen in previous post.
Dmaj-G - C9th- D
1 - 4 - b7 -1

the b7 is used as a dominant 9th ,sub for G min.

it is a very common change.

Anyone know what knee is being used? I don't understand all that 1 - 4 - b7 -1 stuff.

I was trying to figure out the same chord name yesterday, except I was playing on the C6th neck in the key of F. (1st fret with the 5th pedal--strings 2,3,&5)

Would it be wrong to call the chord in this video a Gm6?

It sounds like a Bb with a flatted 5th to me. Only because just after the chord, I hear steps up to C then back up to D

it's a C9.
Other chord charts show a iv (Gm), a iv6 (Gmin6) chord, or a ii7b5 (Emin7 b5) (for the key of D).
A page of standard sheet music for this song, whether as originally written or not, shows a C7 (in D).

I have been searching for a backing track for this song.
Is there one available to purchase? H.P.

Best bet might be to try contacting the guy who played the song. Sounds like he had a backing track.

I usually think of this chord as used here as a minor 6th. AB and E-Eb lever, per Dave, 2 frets back if you add the 7th string [G here]. Either way it's implied.

There is a nice resolve to the 1 out of that position by just releasing the B pedal and moving the E string from lowered to raised half step with strings 4,5 & 6. "that"-"name".

Regardless of what it's called, the important thing is to know the sound it makes and how to find it on your guitar.

A big "YEP" on that!

The notes of a Gm6 are G Bb D E

The notes of Em7b5 are E G Bb D (same notes!)

The notes of a C9 are C E G Bb D

The bottom line is - the bottom line! I think I hear a C (10th string, 1st fret), which would make it a C9. To get this chord, use the B+C pedals and the E lever.

On C6th, it's pedal 6 at the 7th fret, with the low C on the 9th string.

I played the equivalent of a C9 on my track and guitar. C7 works fine to and one version I leaned from had a Gm in place of the C9.

John, thanks for posting that video, Arnett is one of the unsung heroes of the steel guitar. I've met him and played with him at some of the MASGA events. No matter who shows up at those, Arnett always has the best tone on that old Marlen of anyone there. A truly great player........JH in Va.
