I'm interested in learning more about when the different models came out and how they're classified. Anyone have any good leads?

I'll get it started. Feel free to correct or add...

Briefly,

Dual Pro (double neck)
Custom (triple neck)

Late '40s thru mid '50s
22.5" scale.
Single "trapezoid" string through pickup each neck.
Three telescoping legs
One piece ash body in blonde or walnut finish.
Mostly 8 strings per neck, some 6 strings.
Bar and diamond fret markers
Felt pad on underside

Very early ones:
Actual walnut bodies
No legs (Dual Pro)
Rectangular "box car" string through pickups
Roman numeral fret position markers.

Someone want to start on the Stringmaster line?

A quick and easy I.D. for the Stringmasters I use is:

Generally,

Stringmasters, double, triple and quad (four neck)

Blonde and Walnut finish

'53-'54
Chrome pickup covers
individual neck selection slider switches
"fixed" bridge cover (no blend control underneath).
"Lolipop" tuner buttons (same as on the Dual pro and Custom models)
26" scale only

'55
22.5" and 24" scale only
black pickup covers
bridge cover flips up for blend control access.
Individual push button neck selectors.
Kluson style tuner buttons

'56 on
same features as above, but
Telecaster style blade neck selector switch replaces push buttons.

*note: the quads continue to use push button neck selectors throughout their run from around '55 on.

As with all Fender guitars, changing features may overlap some from year to year. (i.e. '56 with push buttons, etc.)

Something I have found helpful to tell the scale length at a glance:

26" shows four small markers from the end of the fret board to the large 24th marker.
24"---three markers
22.5--two markers

Right-o about the overlap, Scott. I've got a '56 blondie with pushbuttons.
