There's a ZB at my local shop (and this town is about as friendly to steel guitarists as the moon). Theyre asking for 2000 obo. What would a reasonable offer be?

That looks to be a Texas built guitar when Tom Brumley owned the company from the picture. 2 grand is not a bad price if the condition is nice and nobody has messed the undercarraige up. Check it out, play it and see what you think. ZB's have a unique tone all their own. Of course you you can get it for less, that makes it even better!!! Really hard to put a value on a guitar with just one picture and not looking over the mechanics.

From what the shop says, the owner recently passed away. His grandson is selling it. Looks like its been sitting around for many years. It's a ZB custom. All the parts seem to be there - maybe not pulling the way they should. Pretty grimy underneath. Right now all I can see is the countless hours I'll be spending on cleaning and fixing it!

| That guitar seems older than the Brumley models on the underside, but I could be wrong. Also those pulls are probably ok. That vintage of ZB didn't pull everything in a straight line. In fact in Winnie Winston's book they talk about how things look crooked but they are that way for a reason. At least I think it was Winnie's book. |

If you need help on this guitar, Billy Knowles is an expert on ZBs. He is at 910 296 7428. He maintained Tom Brumley's guitars.

| i'd grab it. you don't find that many zb's that already have a bunch of knee levers. interesting model....no horns on the pegheads and pedals aren't segmented 3 and 5. |

Looks to be in pretty good shape and everything is there plus, its loaded with knee levers. This is for sure built in Texas when Tom Brumley was the sole owner. 2k....I would have to jump on it for that price. The Texas guitar dont come around too often for sale.

Are those knee levers stock? The 2 ZB's I owned had non-adjustable levers. That was biggest complaint about my ZB's.

Richard, those were the stock levers for the Texas built guitars. BIG improvement over the old ones. I have worked on a few that had these levers on it.

I really like the look of the older models, the ones that had the "cat-ear" keyheads and changers, and think they are one of the most attractive designs out there. The newer ones (like this one) may be better, mechanically, but they just don't have the cachet of the originals.
One of my complaints about all steels made today is that there's nothing really striking about their visible metal parts. From across the room, they all look pretty much alike. And unless you;'re an expert, one changer and keyhead looks pretty much like any other.
There was no mistaking the old Sho~Bud and ZB designs, and you could tell there was some artistry involved when they were designed; a desire to "stand out" from anyhing else being made.  |

Thanks Greg. I wish those had been around when I bought my 2 ZB's. I might still have them.
I have to agree with Donny. Those "ears" or "horns" were really cool.
