I'm new to the forum as well as the pedal steel guitar. I'm not quite ready to buy a new amp (unless a deal comes along), so I'm trying to make what I have work.
All of my guitar amps are low wattage tube, so I'm using an old Peavey Classic VT 100 watt 2X12 hybrid amp. I've fiddled with the amp's settings endlessly, but I'm just guessing what should emphasized in the tonal spectrum as I search for a pedal steel type sound.

The second post in this thread here http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=223731 tells you, step by step, how to find your tone.
I can't recall whether the classic has the knob marked "Shift;" if it doesn't, the balance between "honking" and "sweet" might be harder to find.

what are your low powered amps?
I've played very large venues with 12 and 22 watt amps....
What tone are you going for? A super clean modern thing or a dirtier classic sound? If you have a stereo volume pedal run both (you may get a ground hum that you have deal with though...easy) and I bet you will have enough headroom and volume with two amps going
... having an impedance matcher (black box or matchbox type thing) definitely will help get you some headroom on a low powered amp also.. and those boxes are pretty cheap and are great even when you do get a high powered amp.
I'm heading out to do some very big venues and festivals and it sure looks like a Silverface Deluxe is my back line... other than having a hard time taming the high end on it it has plenty of power for stage and I'm at 5.5 on the volume... 22 watts is LOUD. |

I had one of those amps and it was great with a Les Paul playing classic rock. I never did get it clan and loud, and I don't think it was designed for that. It was a heavy and wonderful amp, but I let it go years ago.
To answer your question, set all the controls at 12:00, with the reverb off and tweak the sound by reducing gain, treble and mids instead of boosting. There is tons of headroom in that amp, so use it to achieve a cleaner sound. |
