Well well well It was one of the greatest Steel Guitar Jams I have ever ran since I started Steel Guitar Jams Everyone had a super time and the band did a super job of playing.I want to thank Sid Hudson,Ray Walker,Jimmy Underwood,Allen Howington.Johnny Howington,Ray Thomas,Billy Barbou (BJ) Jerome Hawks,Kevin Robbins and Evans Rose.I want to thank our 12th Steel player and owner of the Gold N Pawn George Williamson for helping us and letting use Jam at his Business. We had room for about 4 more Steel players.I also want to thank Billy (BJs)Farther for playing Lead Guitar and BJs Wife for playing drums and Ira for playing Bass along with George.Everyone had a great time and I know Sid Hudson left just after we got back from lunch break and played his second set as he was headed for Saluda S.C. Steel Show.Once again we all had a great time and we will do it all over April 28.

Well thank you Sam for giving so much of your time putting it all together for the local players. Sid came down and jammed and still went further down to be at Saluda this afternoon, evening and tomorrow. I guess it only goes to show that folks can actually do both if they set their minds to it.

Thank You Ray we were all glad that you were there with us and we really enjoyed having you there. These guys are still fighting to play beside you so they can steal your licks. Next Steel Jam I will bring some boxing gloves so they cam see who will win to set up next to you.Anna and I enjoyed the jam and was glad that we had Sid Hudson there with us. I think he is close to being another Buddy Emmons.

As for Sid Hudson, I dont know what went wrong at Saluda but at Clayton all eyes and ears were on him while he was playing. I met him for the first time, a very nice fella to talk with. Looking fwd to April. Thanks again for you work.

thanks Sam (and George - and the band) for hosting us this Sat - I will say, Sam at 70+ years YOUNG has as much enthusiasm and energy as anyone i've seen, its great to have someone ramrod these jams and get us all together to swap tunes.

thanks to both Kevin Robbins and Sid Hudson, who both drove a good ways to attend. I'm glad I got to see Sid Hudson play - that was unreal - i was standing there like the rest of the gang, going wow, am i really hearing what i think i am!! I would have hated to be Johnny H following that performance, but Johnny proved the old coaches adage that "Perfect Practice makes Perfect Performance" - and nailed it!

Todd - you might give your observations over in the Saluda thread, as none of us were there. I will say that Sid was as nice and gentlemanly as could be at our jam and it was great to have a player of his stature show up.

Anyone in NC/SC/VA come on down to the April jam

Todd like you said everyone has their own opinion and I have mine.Everyone at our Clayton jam sat back and listened to Sid play and they could not be leave what a super job he done. The thing is everyone plays and no one plays when there is a Steel player playing. So the Blame is on who ever was in charge. You have only been playing a short time and have a lot to learn about Steel guitar players. I have been playing 14 years and I still am not real good at it. I have been in country music and listening to Steel Guitar players for 72 years. What you have to do is keep things to yourself as some one is going to get mad and then there is trouble. So you have to learn to keep things to yourself and bite your toung.I don't think BOB that runs the forum is going to be to happy with all you said.I have met Buddy Emmons, John Hughey,Joey Wright,Russ Hicks, Tommy Dodd,Herby Wallace,Bobby Seymour, and lots more that I have met at a lot of Steel Guitar Shows. The Norwalk CT. stteel Show Bill Hankey's Steel Show,The Steel Show in Kentuckey, the Steel Show in Nashville and the Steel Guitar Travaganza that Carl ran in Atlanta Georgia back in the late 70's.

First of all, thanks George, & Sam (and your lovely wife Anna) for all the hard work to provide us a "gathering-place" to meet old friends and make new ones with our Steel guitars. As for Sid, I really appreciated his talent and conversation with us all, a very nice gentleman with much knowledge of the Steel guitar. Not to mention that great sounding P/P Emmons that he was playing. Sid, I do hope you can make all of our future jams (including the one in Kannapolis the last Saturday in March), as there is much to learn and enjoy with a freind and picker like yourself around us. Thanks again for your long hours of driving and sharing the Steel guitar with us all.

I would like to take this opportunity and say to all the guys at the Clayton Jam session this past weekend what a great time we all had.

I can honestly say I have never met a friendlier group of guys. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to each and every player that participated.

More than that; I very much enjoyed meeting and talking to each and every player. You are a Class act group of folks that obviously have fellowship at the top of your list and I for one love that.

All of you are excellent players and I could see it in your face how much you love doing it and as for me, that is all that is important.

Thanks again,
Sid

I don't like getting involved with these types of posts , but because this has happened at our Florida Steel Guitar Club I will.
Where as I do the MC at our monthly club I have in the past had to confront a player or two to stop playing while another has the stage.
At the beginning of a Round Robin for new commers I will also mention this as well as when they are doing their set.
I have found that once this is set forth to them they all come in line.
If there is someone who forgets or just gets caught up in the moment I will walk over to them and quietly remind them.
Case closed.

What is very hard to do is to ask the audiance to give the players some courtesy and keep the talking down to a minimum.
Both Jack and I had to make this announcement during last month's jam.
We got a loud applause after doing so.
Some folks have told us they stopped coming to the jams in the past because of the loud talking while players are playing.
I hope this can shed some light on this subject from someone who deals with it each month for the last 9 1/2 years.
Set the ground rules ahead of time to derail such problems in the future.
Don

Don we had no problem at the Clayton Steel Guitar Jam.The first thing I said when we started was do not play while an other Steel Player is playing.I do this at all our Steel jams and the people that are there listening are always quit and respect the Steel players. It seem to me that the problem was in Saluda where you had one person complain about a player playing with all the players and over playing the other players. The person that it was suppose to be played at our Jam the day before and he was very kind and never played over anyone.I have run two Steel Guitar Associations in Rhode Island and 6 Steel Shows in both Associations for a total of 6 years and a Steel Jam in Greeneville Tennessee. I have now run 3 and number four (4) Steel Guitar Jams in Clayton N.C..I started all this from 1998 to now total of 12 years and GOD willing I will do it for another 12 years or more.I will see you and Jack at the March Meeting and Jam.

Just wanted to say what a fun day it was in Clayton this past Saturday. Thanks to Sam and all is hard work and to the owner of the gold and pawn for allowing us to use his facilities! So many nice people and so many great sounding steel guitars as well. Sid was an incrediable player and I enjoyed watching him play. Not realizing I would be next, I was thinking durn I got to follow that?? Shocked
Jerome you are right. It was a good thing I did practice. You had some good moves yourself!
It was also a pleasure to meet new steel players that came. Ray, glad you were able to come. Always a blast talking to you and playing! Also enjoyed spending the day with my brother and Larry. I make them pull their hair out sometimes trying to show me something on the steel. Good to have people you can go to when you need help!! Also thanks to my wife! Nice to have her support in something I enjoy doing!!
Look forward to seeing you all again soon!!

First off I want to let you all know I appreciate all of you that came and hope we can keep this Jam going.
I will try to do them every 3 months. I just have to make sure we don't have one the same day as other Steel Jams in the neighboring States.I watch that very close as I do not need some one coming on our thread and telling me their problems. Our next one is April 28TH and I had posted this one back in October of 2011Hope to keep peace with other our neighbors. One more thing. Jerome Hawkes I'm 75 years old and feel 25. I have a good friend in Tennessee Wayne Morgan that I followed to the Kentucky Steel Show a few years back and he said he had to get a motel to rest as I pushed him all the way there. He also said that no two 17 year olds can keep up with me.I still have a lot of energy left in me maybe to much.

Thanks Sam for a great time Saturday. I enjoyed meeting new picking friend as well as the fellowship with old buddies. Everyone did a great job playing. As far as Sid playing with a straight pick,, he can play with his toe nails if he wants too. One heck of a musician. His Dad was great to talk with also.
Be Blessed!!!!

Kevin,
I'm sorry I didn't mention your name Kevin. It was a pleasure to see you again. I remember the first time I met you at MASA jam. We were starting on the steel about the same time as I remember. I also remember you and your wife singing. You know that was at least 3 years ago and if I remember that it was obviously really good. You have really great equipment and sound wonderful on the steel. I can tell you have been hard at the steel man!! Great to see you and I'm glad you were able to come to this jam. Look forward to seeing you in the future jams!

I don't nomally get into other peoples problems but since some of this discussion was pointed at the Southern Steel Guitar Convention in Saluda,SC I think I will make a comment. Sid Hudson is one of the finest steel players you will ever hear. I been doing this Steel show for 25 years and met many great players. If Todd Brown has a problem with the way My Show is being conducted he should have come to me and the problem would have been addressed. He should have come on Sunday it was his lose. That's my two cents.

@ Todd . I am Floored.. Sid Hudson is a staple in this community and one of the most underrated players in the business!!!! Though you state Sid has an ego" Don't we All "??
He has accomplished more in his Career then you me and most here will ever scratch the surface of !!!.. You mention his flat pick style have you ever watched Ray flack, Vince Gill, Ricky Scaggs ,Eric Johnson, Danny Gatton play guitar? they play the Exact style that Sid moved over to steel because it was comfortable for him.
2 picks and a thumb pick is NOT!! the gospel.. so how dare you deminish his playing ability for being different .. I have been at this going on 35 yrs and have known of Sid Hudson most all of those 35 .. My dad would sneak me into clubs in the DC area to see Sid Hudson , Danny Gatton, Buddy Emmons ect.. They were honing their craft way back then .were you ? He was a monster then and well respected then too. I'm sure he would be welcome on any stage . Sid Hudson is one of my Heros in this business if you Feel the others didn't get a turn to shine it's probably because you failed to notice they were letting him shine. I have no dog in thus hunt other than the fact that Sid Hudson is one of my fondest childhood memories in this business, and thought you needed correcting on your statements of him not being
very good .. You my friend have a lot of woodshedding ahead of you to be able to make that statement about a player like Sid Hudson .

This is just my opinion. I have all the respect in the world for Sid Hudson. He is a great player and a true professional. I played bass with him at the Sat and Sun shows and I didn't notice anything rude about him, but I'm just a bass player.
