RAM may or may not be the problem, but 512 isn't enough. You can put 2GB in that machine, 1GB in each of the 2 slots, and see if your version of Windows recognizes it. I'd definitely try it. _________________ C#

Cal, the factory specs say it will handle 2gb as does the ram supplier.. so I ordered them up for $38 . it could be a cheap fix but at least it's not a lot of dough .. thanks |

Let us know how this goes Bo.
Bad RAM does cause random lockups. Bad, leaking electrolytic capacitors also cause lockups, as well as shutdowns. Overheated CPUs, due to dust clogged heating fins and fans also cause lockups and shutdowns.
Malware that is poorly coded is known to cause such problems. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Here's whats up. I opened up the cpu, vacuumed all the dust bunnies up, including the accumulated dust on the processor that the fan blows down on it..
Pulled the 512mb card and installed 2x1GB cards.
So far it's working like a charm.. way faster access to everything.. will it stop the dsl modem from freezing? That remains to be seen.. if it even makes the freezes end faster.. then I am all in .. |
