I have a beautiful custom made non-pedal D10 steel guitar that is great for beginning steel player. It is quality built and has tweed case all like new condition. It is tuned to E13 and C6. Asking $900.00 plus shipping.

Let me Clarify here....I want an S10 with 3 pedals, and one to four knee levers. Carter starter...GFI Student model...Maverick that has the knee lever that lowers the E strings...etc...under $800

Jory, I would strongly suggest you stay away from a Carter starter, not many positive reviews on that one.

For around the same price a Stage One would be a much better steel.

I'm sure others will offer similar suggestions when comparing Carter starter to a Stage One.

Best bet is to check with some of the guys/gals (and there are plenty) that have one.

Also, you DON'T want 1 knee lever, you should have a minimum of 4 knees(absolute min of 2) with 3 pedals. You want to at least be able to raise AND lower the E's and you can't do that with a maverick from what I hear.

Not sure on the GFI student model, more experienced players can help out on that one.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum. This is by far one of the best forums you'll ever be a member of and the longer you are on here the more you'll find that to be true.

Hey Jory, From one Nooby to another (16 months), believe you me this is not the route you want to take! :( After you start in about a week or so you will be wishing you had the other levers. Though you aren't sure of their complete purpose the exploration is a charge all it's own. :whoa: There are Pro level steels on here for just a few dollars more and I promise you will be more satisfied with one of those than some starter rig. I wouldn't want a vehicle with 3 pedals( clutch, brake and accelerator) and 1 wheel. You got the pedals but you ain't goin' anywhere. " Bite the Bullet" like the rest have done. You won't be disappointed. :D YMMV

lol, that's too funny, I guess we should all take reading comprehension 101.

Totally missed the "need for a new student" part.

Best of luck in your search, I'm sure someone will recommend something appropriate.

Jory, I have a Williams D10 Keyless with 8 & 4. I bought this guitar two years ago after it was refurbished by David Kellogg up in Oregon, I believe. It was my first D10 and I have throughly enjoyed this guitar. I just recieved my brand new Zum and was thinking the Willy should help another student. The guitar is beautiful and plays very well. No issues. Let me know if you are interested and I'll be glad to send pictures and make you a good deal.
