I've read most of the posts about flying with your steel but I have not seen much posted about a rack mount system as carry on. I have a custom flight case for my Zum but I really don't want to check my rack setup. Anyone have experience with TSA? Any grief with electronics as carryon?
Thanks. |

I've done a 4-space shallow rack bag as a carry on. I once put a profex-II carefully between my clothes in checked luggage, TSA managed to open my suitcase and repack with a note, and a couple of broken pots! Have checked ATA rack with no problems. |

Electronics are a little tricky for carry on in my experience. Usually with a bit of extra screening you can keep them with you. Be prepared to check your rack stuff in case you get an over achiever TSA guy. The size of your rack case might be a bigger problem than the screening. Check the airline restrictions carefully. _________________ Bob |

Hey Jim I fly quite regularly with my rack gear -- I have my Telonics amp/preamp and TC M300 effects unit in a 3-space Rack bag, with a shoulder strap, apart from the usual xray requirements I have never had any issues carrying it on the plane, both internationally and local flights. I usually stick my volume pedal and stroboflip in the bottom of it with all my leads etc too - never had any problems ! _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Paddy - Thanks for the advice. Now I feel a bit more comfortable heading out. I was worried TSA might force me to check my rig and that thought spawns nightmares. I have a 3 space rack bag with an amp, pre amp, and power conditioner. I'm sure there's a shoulder strap around here somewhere. Didn't think about stuffing my pedal and tuner in the bottom. Great idea.
Thanks
Richard: I'm not yet ready for prime time but I am heading to Vegas on business for a week in March. Figure I'll set the Zum up in the hotel room so I can woodshed during my downtime. Means I will miss the Dallas show this year. Bummer. |

Hey Jim,
my experiences over here in Europe are just as Paddy's, way Down Uner:
as a sound engineer, I always travel with a (not too large but well stuffed) 3-units tube micpreamp rack, I NEVER check it and never had any problems taking it on the plane. |

If you are just practicing in your hotel room. Take an ipad or ipod touch. Get one of the adapters to connect to guitar and play through headphones. It would be lighter, tsa approved, and you can play all hours of the night. |

Jim, check out the Line 6 pocket pod express. Lots of fx to make your steel sound nice, headphone jack, aux in jack for ipod or iphone source material. WAY easier than a rack, my friend! _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION
