More 'name the steel player' fun as Danny Kuaana sings and leads his band thru the classic song. While we get some real nice steel, it's hard to tell by whom?

Is that Danny Stewart on percussion?

Bernie Kaai Lewis. They did their best to keep the haole out of the picture.
According to what I could find, these Studio Telescriptions were produced in 1952 and '53.

Bernie was my #1 guess, but I'm still surprised it's him. And how did I miss/forget Tony's thread?

Yes, throughout the steel guitar introduction they show a rhythm guitar, an ukelele, a drum, and a girl's face. No wonder the public don't know what produces the sound.
Right on!

Bernie Kaai recorded a few records under his own name--one called Polynesian and Hawaiian Music, which I have on 10" LP. He also replaced Dick McIntire (whom his playing most closely resembled, but he also sounded a little like Andy Iona at times) in the Harmony Hawaiians. Cumquat Records has a CD of the Harmony Hawaiians with Bernie. Steel Guitar Boogie by Bernie Kaai from his Polynesian and Hawaiian Music LP.
You can listen to a cut called "
Steel Guitar Boogie" from the aforementioned LP here:

Ray Montee - you said that it was Bernie, confirmed this am by Maili Kuaana. What relation is she to Bernie? John Marsden, England, Hawaiian music historian, would love to get in touch with her to see if she can add to what he has about Bernie. Can you help with an address?

There's a mis-spelling on that album cover.
Should have been "pupule", not "purple".
Pupule meaning "crazy" in Hawaiian.
I've also seen it spelled on other Hawaiian albums as: Poo-poo-ly

Might there be someone out there who knows how the
lady spells her name.
By the way,-Bernie K Lewis is featured on some of Paul Page's Paradise LPs.

Two misspellings if you count "Halihi." The song is actually "Kalihi," a composition by Lani McIntyre.

P.S. Derrick, you nevah responded to my last message. I need to talk to you. Let me know how I can reach you. Mahalo!
