This might be interesting.
How many steels do you own? Brand, # necks, # strings, # pedals and KLs, color and which do you use the most?

Only one....a lacquer push pull with metal necks....8 pedals and 5 levers.

Don't need anything more.

Only other guitar I would love to have is a Sho-Bud Permanent.

My main PSG is a CLR,S12, ext E9..5+5 Red, #2 is A MSA S12"The Universal" set up ext E9, 5+4 green, both laquer, I keep the CLR at Church, the MSA is my practice rig.

A good friend of mine passed away in December. He had eight pedal steels in his collection, I only have two; '76 Emmons P/P D10 9&7 and an MSA S12 3&4 (set up as an E9th 10 string).
His are;
Jackson Madison D10
Mullen RP D10
Emmons LeGrande III D10
Emmons LeGrande III D10
Emmons LeGrande II D10
Emmons P/P D10 Wood
ShoBud D10 8&3 (really old permanent?)
One Emmons P/P that his wife is keeping.

I forgot to list mine.
I have two. Both are Carters. A'96 D10 Black Formica and an '03 D10 Green Formica both have 8 and 8 and are customized for me. I prefer and use the '96 more. At my age, I plan to have both left in my estate.

I have always thought that that green stained MSA is the prettiest steel ever made.

I have three now:

Sierra Olympic S-12, 5+5, black formica, F Diatonic tuning

Desert Rose S-8, 5+5, brown wood, D6 tuning

ETS S-10, 3+4, burgundy paint, E9th tuning

I perform and record on the Desert Rose, and teach on the ETS. I rarely touch the Sierra.

#1 recording guitar_Emmons D-11 wraparound, 8-4.
#1 playing (pedal) guitar, Sho-Bud D-10,11 Professional 8-6.
Recording guitar, formerly for film score work, Sho-Bud D10 Super Pro 8-6 (very modified and had MIDI).
Sho-Bud T-11-11-16, 11 pedals and no knees, yet.
Emmons D-11 cut-tail 10-6.
Wright Q-8 7-peds.
Wright T-10 3-peds.
Marlen T-10 11-3.
Sho-Bud Fingertip D-10 (about to be rebuilt,again).
The guitar that gets played the most is a heavily modified Dekley D-12 that has had the peds and knees removed.

I have three

Fender 1000, 8 pedals
Fessenden d10, 8x8 black
Emmons cut-tail d10, 8x5 black

Mostly, I just play the Emmons these days. I really like them all though.
If I were to get anything else it would probably be a Sho-bud, ZB, or Gibson console grande.

1975 D10 (8+4) ZB Custom (faded cherry/walnut? lacquer)
2005 D10 (8+6) Emmons LeGrande III (black mica)
2008 D10 (8+4) Mullen Royal Precision (blue burl mica)

Use the Mullen for practice in the house, the Emmons for studio and gigs and the ZB only rarely.

I play the Mullen the most because it's the only one that I have permanently set up at home. Love them all but the Emmons is my favourite.

I appreciate that the MSA is easier to change copedent on: the back neck is currently shifting to a 10-string truncated Bb6 Universal (1&12 omitted). Note to those thinking of adding loadsa pulls to one neck of a D-10: load the front neck. It's a BITCH to work 37 pulls around all those knees.

When I find an S-12, that'll probably become my gigging guitar. Due to weight, I prefer schlepping the Zum. I kinda like the MSA tone better.

I've sold some instruments in the past year, here's what I have now:

1981 Emmons D-10 P/P 8x4, walnut mica.
Rittenberry, SD-10, 3x5, black/red.
Desert Rose, S-10, 4x5, brown lacquer.
Emmons Student Model, S-10 P/P, 3x4, white mica.

I don't play the D-10 too much, I alternate between the others, but the Rittenberry is my favorite. The Emmons Student model is the one I use when weight is an important consideration.

Ron, ETS is East Texas Steel, I believe yet another started by Bud Carter. I'm sure someone will chime in and confirm or denounce.

I do believe that if you have more than one, one of them will have at least a slight edge over the
other(s) whether in actuality or in your mind...........one just fits better.

I gots two:
Shobud Pro II custom D10
Shobud Pro II custom SD10

I have two....a 1975 D10 Emmons PP, 8&4, "satin" walnut mica, purchased new from Ron Sr. and just recently acquired BMI "Flight Ready", 3&5, black mica. Presently, I'm playing my BMI, both stage & studio.

I Have Two Sho-Bud LDG. New GFI Ultra. Three Amps Webb- Session 400- Nashville 112. Sonny.

I have two distinctly different guitars and use them for distinctly different purposes.

For true country music, for the C6 neck and anything else that calls for a clean, bell tone I generally pull the '74 Emmons out of my studio, it is a D10 with 8+5 and George L humbuckers installed, and is the guitar I practice with.

For down-and-dirty roadhouse and fast blues-oriented sounds the ShoBud Pro I gets the call every time. It is a '78 S10 with 3+2 (knees on the right side) and has that classic single-coil growl, a very edgy tone that some have told me they identify with my playing style (maybe I'm taking it out TOO much). It makes a good jam guitar as it is also lighter and very quick to set up, also the right knee levers make for faster dominant 7th passing patterns.
