I recently sold a pair of Zum S-12 Uni's w/ a modified universal copedant. Unfortunately, there were a couple of copedant chart typos re: the 6th, 9th, and 10 strings.

My modification to the traditional Universal tuning is predicated on the fact that the 9th string [D] is an integral part of the E9th tuning, and should not have to be sacrificed (as the case with the Jeff Newman copedant that most use).

My goal was to devise a Uni tuning that didn't require losing the D string.

So, I came up with the idea of a 4-change lock-lever, that allowed me to keep the D string while playing E9th and get rid of it while playing B6th.

THE RESULT:

Tony, how does the string gauge differences affect the 9th and 10th strings while playing the E9th? Seems to be a bit thick. Also, I use the low G# which you do not have on this tuning. Inventive idea though.

Hi Tony,
Are you out of the S12U biz now?
What is the plan for your next axe?
Thx,
Pete B.

Albert: The heavier strings actually sound great.

Pete: I'm back to the D-10, I recently bought a nice LeGrande..............The only reason I bailed on the Uni, is simply because there are not enough gigs down here, to become fully comfortable on the 12 string, (I've played maybe 2 gigs in the last year)........I enjoyed the copedant though.

Many, many years ago, Buddy Emmons was experimenting with the E9/B6 Universal and that's what he did with the ninth and tenth strings. He couldn't live without that D in the ninth position.

Didn't knew that.......did he have a lock-lever?
