Hi everyone,

Ive never posted on the pedal steel section as Im a non-pedaler who is eventually wanting to get a pedal set-up. I am wondering if anyone knows what sort of steel Lloyd Maines plays and/or anything else about his gear. I really love his playing and tone with Uncle Tupelo and James Hand and its hard to find much info about him on line. Thanks

The last I heard, he was playing a black mica SD-10 Mullen.

I'm pretty sure he plays a Mullen now, but I have no idea what he was playing way back then.

I asked a similar question about a year or two back and Lloyd actually emailed me this regarding his playing on Anodyne. I'm sure he wouldn't mind me sharing his details:

"Julian.....Lloyd Maines here. A friend of mine forwarded your unquiry about my gear on Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne.....Man, that was around 1992 or 93, I think.....I was playing a Sho-Bud Super Pro through a Boss Delay pedal and plugged in Direct into the recording console....We were cutting live in a pretty small space, so the direct worked better and sounded fine.....it was fun...thanks for your interest."

I've got an old instructional video of his with him playing a ShoBud pro II. Granted, that was probably 25 years ago. I do believe he is playing Mullen guitars now. He's not bad on dobro, either.

Awesome, thanks Julian! I love his work especially on "High Water" on Anodyne and also on two James Hand albums that he played on and also produced.

lloyd's on any dixie chicks tune you want to copy. 'let 'er rip' is a cool one. i used to just fake part of it.

Don't forget his early work with Joe Ely, some a** kikin pikin goin on in Lubbock back in those days too!! When I first met Lloyd in Lubbock around 73-74 ,he was playing a Sahara ,made by Bob Stufflebeam (spelling?) in Leveland TX I think is where Bob was...Stormy

storm your right on the sahara. bob was from shallowater tx. not levelland. when i 1st met lloyd, he had his old sahara, but was playing a red sho bud proII. he went on to a super pro, zumsteel. but has been playing mullen for some time now. i remember a beautiful red laquer d10 at one time. he doesn't do any c6th anymore and has been playing a black sd10. he always played a peavey ltd when he amped anything. one of the best around and a nice guy to boot!

Is there a site anywhere that tells other records he has played on? I am really interested in finding some more examples of pedal players doing alt country stuff too if anyone can suggest some. Its nice to hear the steel in that slightly different context ya know? Thanks for all the great info!

We've been listening to James Hand a lot in the van, Lloyds pickin' on the record is great.

Lloyd is currently recording with Austin Texas singer Amanda Cevallos.

Baxter, when he got me the psg gig at Bigger'n Dallas with Bobby Albright (I think) he was usin an Ampeg (don't remember the model) one piece with 2x 12" either JBL's or Lansings, I just remember it bein insanely heavy..lol...Stormy

You can go to www.lloydmaines.net and find out about Lloyd's gear. I have the black Mica Mullen SD-10 that he had from 1998-2010. He just got a brand new Red Lacquer Mullen G2 SD-10.
