Does anyone have any favorite albums in the "alt." country genre that have some good PSG on them? I really like Uncle Tupelo (Lloyd Maines) and Ryan Adams (Jon Graboff and Cindy Cashdollar) and Whiskeytown. Just curious to see who some of you guys may like.

Son Volt-Trace, with Eric Heywood on steel is a must-have.

Drive-By Truckers- Brighter Than Creations Dark with John Neff, who is a member here, is a great record also.

Check out Kathleen Edwards. She's had a few different steelers on the different albums:
Tom Thompson on her first one: Failer
Eric Heywood on Back to Me
Greg Leisz on Asking for Flowers
and I can't recall any steel parts on the latest album, Voyageur, off the top of my head. This album is a departure from the Alt-Country genre.

The first three are really good though.

Yep, I agree with Steve - Richmond Fontaine's 'Post to Wire' is a brilliant alt country album with beautiful (and very prominent) steel playing by the forum's very own Paul Brainard. I think I've listened to it a hundred times and I've never got sick of it. 'Winnemucca' is another good one of theirs, and their other albums are brilliant as well but maybe don't have as much steel.

Another couple of faves are Zoe Muth's two albums, 'Lost High Rollers' and 'Starlight Hotel', featuring the very tasty steel playing of Dave Harmonson, who is also a forum member. I love his playing at the moment - it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up! And he's no slouch on the six string and dobro either.

Both these amazing steel players I've found to be very approachable and willing to help out and offer advice, which is just one of the many great things about this forum - you get to ask your heroes questions about their set-up, equipment, tunings, etc.!

Not Alt Country, but featuring Paul Niehaus on psg - Calexico. I'm really enjoying their album "Carried to Dust." Beautiful stuff. Surf meets Mariachi meets rock. We can all use a bit of spaghetti western in our soundtrack.

Plus 1. The steel is especially prominent on the 'Winnemucca' album. 'Post to Wire' is probably a better overall record, but the steel is deeper in the mix. Can't go wrong either way.

John Howie Jr.'s & Rosewood Bluff's new CD, Leavin' Yesterday is a great piece of work featuring forum member Nathan Golub's fine steel. The address on the CD is www.johnhowiejr.com.

Burke Carroll of Toronto on Oh Susanna and Justin Rutledge CD's. Check out the steel ride at the end of Beauty Queen by Oh Susanna. You can hear it on Burke Carroll's My Space site. Just beautiful.

Greg,
thanks for suggesting Zoe Muth! I bought "Starlight Hotel" and that is an amazing album from front to back IMHO. And Wow, Dave Harmonson's playing is steel guitar perfection to my ears. I had never heard of him before but I will be trying to find more examples of his playing for sure. Would love to know his set up. Love the tone and its lack of effects.

New Riders of the Purple Sage...the steel playing on one of those records in particular is off the hook..."Gypsy Cowboy"...I have heard some of the other records, but that one has the best steel playing on it...I learned licks off of it about 40 years ago that I still use every day!

Just got Zoe Muth. How can someone so young have so much soul. Dave's not bad on all of the instruments he picks. The dobro on "My old Friend" made me run and tune mine up and play along. What a great musician. thanks for this thread.
