I have recently experienced the fact that some buyers on Ebay of cd's will possibly burn a copy of the cd and then want their money back. No real reason for sending the cd back, just want their money back. The buyers know that the sellers cannot give them any negative feedback and they also know that they can give the seller negative feedback and therefore can force the seller to refund money or get a negative feedback. The feedback for a seller is all important and any negative feedback can hurt your sales. Ebay has really screwed up on that one. I can't imagine anyone not wanting the Jimmy Bryant/Buddy Emmons cd after ordering it, at least not wanting it if they have to pay for it especially when they can burn a copy and then get their money back. No wonder none of the guys are putting out much new product. Many of our friends and neighbors and fellow steel guitar lovers are guilty of that practice.
I have decided to stay put here in Indiana for another six months so I will have the same address if anyone is interested in any of our cd's. Thanks to all of you guys for your great support of these 35 year old recordings by the masters.

I recently purchased the Bryant & Emmons cd from CDBaby as digital downloads. I am a big Jimmy Bryant fan and would like to have anything that has him on it. Having said that, I could see why somebody may be dissatisfied with the recording once they received it. There are only six tracks (which I knew before I bought it) but the sound quality is less than I hoped for. Everything in the mix is panned full left or right. I listen to music most of the time with headphones and the hard panning drives me crazy. I dislike it so much that I have thought about remastering the cd so that the balance is brought more to the middle.
I think that the price is too much for six songs of poor sound quality and whereas I'm not asking for my money back, I wouldn't make the purchase if I had a do-over.
I do sympathize with you, though. It does suck if the seller is not able to leave buyer feedback. I didn't know that ebay made that change.
Just my opinion...

As an occasional eBay seller, I have always left feedback for buyers. Has that, in fact, recently changed? I'd be surprised...

Dave, you could (and should) put in your eBay listing: "All Sales Final". Simple solution to this problem.

A seller can no longer leave "negative" feedback on a buyer. Only positive or neutral.

The intent was to get more people buying on Ebay. The suits apparently thought that people were choosing Amazon, etc. over Ebay, because they were afraid of getting a "negative" feedback.

IMHO, I think Ebay really gave sellers the finger with that decision.

Dave.....I have always maintained that the recording of Jimmy and Buddy was of a live jam session. I have always adveretised that when you listen to this cd just imagine that you are at the jam as you will hear all of the background noises, talking back and forth between the musicians and so on. No master to mix, just a tape of the session. I took the tape to two different studios and they came up with what is on the cd. I'm not an engineer so there was nothing that I could do except to accept what the studios gave me. I listen to it in my van all the time and really enjoy it. I am sorry that you don't like it. I will gladly refund your money.
I have another great jam featuring Jimmy, Buddy, Doug Jernigan, Maurice Anderson and Julian Tharpe. Really wild but about the same recording quality as the masters were also misplaced by the same studio. Probably the best jam session I have ever been to and it was professionally recorded. That jam cd was my next project but after two complaints about the Bryant cd in the last week there must be many more that haven't said anything. Maybe I will just keep that last project for myself as I am the only one that can complain about it and believe me, I have complained because of the fact that I don't have the masters. Personally, I would listen to Jimmy Bryant and Buddy Emmons playing together no matter what the situation, in an alley, on the back of a pickup truck. You just can't get new stuff by them anymore....They were the best. You complained about only six tracks. The six tracks, being a jam, timewise equal out to more than 10 tracks. Like I said....I am really sorry but did the best with what we had to work with.
Thanks,
Dave A. Burley

The feedback system, still works the same as it always has for buyers. I think what Dave may be referring to:

If for any reason, the Buyer feels they didn't get what they paid for, they can leave Negative feedback, describing their reason/s why.

So rather than take a chance on a buyer doing that, (which would drop the seller's Rating) Dave feels, you're trapped into refunding the Buyer's money, or you'll get negative feedback, which drops your rating as a seller.

But just as Jim said. Put "All sales are Final" "No Returns Accepted"

That covers it all. Ebay will then remove that buyers' negative feedback, and reinstate your rating.

So Dave, you can start selling them again on Ebay Smile

I also agree with what, Dave Alfstad said. There's nothing worse than paying for something and finding it's not at all, what you expected it to be, or advertised to be. In that case, the seller, would (in my opinion) be asking for a negative feedback from the buyer.

Bottom line is, don't feel that just because it's a recording of this one or that one, that people will accept it, if the item is less than how it's described.

Regardless, the key to it all is: As a seller, describe the item being offered for sale in full. Then people will accept it for what it is, when they buy it, and provide positive feedback.

NOTE:

The above in no way, pertains to Dave Burley selling his products. It's for anyone doing business or selling anything.

"Honesty is the best policy to avoid complaints and comebacks"

Dave, I would try Ebay again with "All Sales Final" "No Returns Accepted"

Edited to add (after reading Dave Burley's reply post:

Dave, just saying it's a live performance, isn't really describing the item/s. I say that because I've heard some mighty good live recordings, and I've also heard some really lousy live recordings.

I feel if there were distractions (Noise, affecting the quality of the recordings or any number of other things) all of that should be pointed out when describing the CD/s. Then I'm sure the one's who purchased the item/s wouldn't have any complaints.

Remember, as a seller, of the CD's and the way you feel about them, (regardless of the quality). The way you feel about it, (because it was recorded years and years back, etc.,) doesn't really pertain to how a buyer/s would feel after hearing it, for the first.

My opinion only. Other's may vary.

Regards
Don

Dave, you also have clips of the CDs on YouTube so you can direct potential buyers to the links as a "free sample". That way they will hear exactly what they are getting (well, close, given some audio compression) before they buy. Then say "All Sales Final. No Returns" and you should be good to go.

Those of you that are familiar with my productions know that I have always described them as being live and not mixed because of the loss of the master's. I don't have modern in the home equipment like many do so I play my cd's when traveling and loving the jams as much as I do I wouldn't want the cd's any different. I feel quite sure that the only person to send the cd back probably burned a copy off and got his money back. He did say it had nothing to do with the music, it was the look of the cd. The fact that I buy small amounts of cd's at one time, I have to pay much more for them than if I could order 1,000 or so. The cds have only print on the front, are in a thin case and don't look like a multi-color professional cd. My intent was mainly to get the music out there before I left this earth. There is nothing else out there by Jimmy and Buddy. There's very little out there by Julian Tharpe and after contemplating keeping everything shelved forever I decided to share what I could with the steel guitar world. It surely isn't for the money because there is none although the response has been quite good with many emailing me thanking me and telling me how much they enjoy the cd's. What does a man do? This next cd with Jimmy Bryant, Buddy, Doug, Maurice and Julian Tharpe is some awfully good stuff. The boys were on that day, sitting side by side on a stage at the Horseshoe Lounge in Muskegon, Mich. A little bit of wine, a little bit of coffee and a few other things had the boys cooking that day. I am a musician and I have been listening to all of this stuff for over 35 years and will listen to it until I'm gone. I have put a no-return claimer on the cd's on Ebay.
Thanks,
Dave A. Burley

I had a similar experience,after sending an album to Seattle, I got it back after two months, guy said it was aLL SCRATCHED up and wanted his money back. It is still playing as good as ever. I guess no returns is the way to go. { surely he wouldn't have recorded it ????? }

No Returns... It's the only way to go with any item that can be copied/burned/ripped/recorded. CD's, DVD's, records, ANYTHING. They'll do it every time. I learned the hard way on that one. They'll email a few days after receiving it, saying it's unplayable, scratched, or whatever. They've already got what they want...

You can still leave negative feedback for buyers or sellers. That won't go away. But a situation like this does tie your hands. You don't want negative feedback, and they know it. So they know you almost have to give them their money back.

Dave, maybe edit your description a little, put a link to the clips on youtube, and accept no returns. What else can you do....

Hey Dave,
I did not want my post to be misconstrued as me complaining about my purchase. If the subject hadn't have come up I would have never said anything about it. I was just responding to your statement that you couldn't imagine somebody not wanting it after getting it. I was just trying to show the other side of the coin from a buyer's perspective.
I know that you are not a big cd producer and I didn't expect professional quality. I knew it was a live cd and I didn't have any expectations of it sounding like a professional release. I was just commenting about the panning and my personal opinion of it. I do not want a refund, and I wouldn't even think of asking for it; I was just opining on your comment.
I am glad that there are people like you out there to preserve some of this treasured material before it gets lost forever.

Ebay does have a new policy that does not allow the seller to give negative feedback to a buyer. All you can do is give the buyer a positive and then tell your story. Today you can look at all the buyers and they all have 100% feedback. No negatives whatsoever.
Thanks to all for your input.

I don't think Dave ever promoted these CDs as anything but live recordings with all the issues live recordings can have.
