I was travelling in the UK and Italy over Christmas and New Year, with steel guitar. During a session, this is what happened.....

Luckily I also carry a normal guitar pick, which I sometimes use on steel, and there happened to be a few rubber bands handy...

Would MacGyver have done any differently?

It seems I remember a story about some famous player of yore who broke his thumb pick and quite resourcefully fashioned one out of a toothbrush heated and shaped over a burner of a stove. I'm thinking it was either Jerry Byrd or Dick McIntire.

We were so poor I cut up brown clorox bottles or used bobbie pins for pics.

Some innovative answers so far...

Some more thoughts..would Macguyver have considered

- playing without picks?
- using the collar-bone in his shirt collar ?
- not picking with his thumb at all ?

Lets just take a hair comb and use it as the Bar and play banjo licks on steel.
