I recorded this little practice jam last night because it really shows off a cool pedal I just picked up and it also gave me a chance to show my little Billy Preston-isms--he has always been such a big influence on me and I've been trying to get close to his synthesizer sound without actually playing a synth.
Anyway, it's Sly Stone's tune "If You Want Me To Stay", which is a simple little tune, but a real favorite. I start off playing the bass line using my new Electro Harmonix Ring Thing, which is an incredibly cool side-band modulator that does a lot of things, including pitch shifting (it's essentially an advanced ring modulator which I bought to help me get closer to a Fender Rhodes type which, ironically, I don't use in this video). So, the Ring Thing lowers the pitch an octave for my bass line. Then I use it to give me a Rotovibe kind of sound on the chords. Of course, I used my little Boss RC-2 Loop Station to make the loop.
For the lead stuff, one of the Boss VF-1 patches that I made uses a Boss Slow Gear and a Boss Auto-Wah. That's how I get that little synth attack.

| nice playing as usual Mike, and very cool sounds from your processors. I practice a lot using a Boss looper, and find it a great tool. You're inspiring me to try to get more voices on the steel; I usually lay a track with a guitar, set it down, then pick up the steel (same with bass). Cumbersome, but sort of an "instant recording studio" setup. Thanks for sharing your journey, I'm one who always pays attention with a lot of respect and a bit of awe to the things you put out here . |

| Cool Mike! The steel definitely is getting towards that Rhodes vibe but sings out in a way a keyboard just can't do. I dig the subtle allusions to one of the hallmarks of 70s & 80s electronic keyboards - that little pitch wheel they used to bend notes. |

Bingo, Andy, although on this particular clip I didn't do my usual pitch wheel stuff. I have to post some examples of that because it is really cool--I start with a straight note and vibrato it into an almost oscillation-like frenzy, just like the Arp that Preston used. Emulating that pitch wheel became somewhat of an obsession for me over the autumn months. Shame I didn't use it here.
