The late great Hal Rugg.

Hal Rugg was great, and he certainly is deceased, but that ain't him on the video. It could be a very young Jay Dee Maness. The Star Route show was shot in California in the mid-60's.

Is it Jay McDonald?

Larry Petree sent me an email saying the fellow in the video resembles a player from Bakersfield in the 60's named Gil DeLeal.
I'd never heard of the gentleman. Does anyone have any information about Mr. DeLeal?

I bet Jason Odd does... Maybe he'll chime in.

There's a huge sign on the front of the steel that says Gene Davis.

Gene Davis was the bandleader, not the steel player. I knew Gene Davis, who's no longer with us. Gene is not visible on the video in question, but on the second link I posted, he's the guitarist standing behind Glen.

This mystery must be solved
The Star Route show commenced taping in 1964, according to this article in Billboard Magazine. Jason Odd mentioned in a previous post, the steeler in question, might be Canadian, as the show was taped between Toronto and L.A. Neil Flanz might know who the steel player is. If you go to Jay Dee's website
http://www.jaydeemaness.com you will find a photo of Gene Davis and the Star Routers.

According to the comments on this upload of that same clip, its a Canadian steeler named Tom St Denis.

The shows recorded in LA had Red Rhodes on steel.
He's in the background on this clip with Roger Miller. Looks like Bobby Durham in the background on rhythm guitar. The guy holding the fiddle resembles Jimmy Bryant.

Here's one of my favorite's of Gene Davis' songs.

Wow! Good detective work Scott. Of course you've answered one question but opened the door for many more.
What was the Star Route show doing in Canada with Glen, the Star Routers, the Collins Kids and George Morgan? All except for George were Southern Californians.
How come we've never heard of Tom St. Denis, when he's obviously an excellent player?
Did Neil Flanz' album "Get On The Star Route" have something to do with this show being filmed in Canada?
And last, what kind of geetar is Glen playing?

Looks like the same set (without the paned window) and same guitar. Can't see the steel player as well here, but check out the open headstock on the guitar.

The guitar is a Teisco T -60. I assume it was Glen's personal guitar, as it is documented in photos and video being used by Glen on the TV shows "Shindig" , "Star Route" and in the recording studio with the Wrecking Crew.

Good call Larry. I found this pic here. Teisco T-60 is top 2nd from left. Triangle cut-out in the head stock and I guess what is called a "monkey grip" in the lower bout.

I recognize the fiddle player as Canadian great Graham Townsend and that would make sense with Tommy St. Denis playing steel. Some of my more seasoned Canadian friends could fill you in on Tommy.

I observed Glen using that guitar live at a club booking in Pittsburgh CA back in the mid-sixties. It was a terrible POS, and all of us pickers in attendance marveled at the music he made on it, all the while wondering why he chose to play such a crappy instrument.

Check out the top songs of that week in 1964. Brings back good memories to me.

It would make a good set list. Good profit week for Bill Anderson. Five Little Fingers and Saginaw Michigan. Did he write any more of these?
