I am not sure this can be done. I would like to transfer all my programs from my old HP to my new HP. I am running XP in the old and running windows 7 in the new one. Can I do this let me know please. Member of SGF thank you Roger L. Holloway

Roger, the only two ways I can think of doing a 100% full transfer like this are as follows:

1) Remove the old hard drive from the old machine and install it as the primary hard drive on the new machine. XP won't make you re-register it with the new hardware. The caviat here is that there needs to be drivers for XP for the new machine's hardware.

2) Use virtualization software (free) like Virtual PC and either a) run the VM from the old hard drive if you have an enclosure) or b) clone it to a VM. The caviats to this are you have another "machine" to maintain and it won't have direct access to USB or firewire ports. And, this can sometimes be a little confusing at first.

If you aren't technical, then perhaps a local computer tech will do #1 for you. But if you are intrepid enough, either choice is pretty simple.

Windows has a thing called Easy Transfer, but you have to buy a cable. I have kinda the same thing but my CD is in NY and my cable is here. My intention is, like you, to move some files from XP to a Windows 7 computer. I have elected to use an external hard drive.
Put the files on the hard drive and then from the hard drive to the new computer. I use the hard drive for the majority of my files anyway so it works out.

I am an affiliate for a program called PCMover. It is a pay per use application that gets installed onto the old and new computers. Using either a crossover cable, or networking, it transfers all programs, files and settings under one account fro the old PC to the new one. FAST (File And Settings Transfer) does not move applications as was requested by the OP.

That's nice to read John. I happen to have just tonight received some 10% off coupon codes for all of the LapLink products I am authorized to promote. I will be posting those codes on the PCMover page and wherever else makes sense.

You don't need the cable for Easy Transfer, it's one of the methods. I just did this with an external hard drive. It worked rather well.

If I were you, I'd take Jack up on his offer. No substitute for experience, and the Easy Transfer isn't a 100% solution, particularly if you're changing e-mail applications.

Lee brought his old and new Laptops over yesterday. He basically wanted his "download" file which had some downloaded programs plus some BIAB song files copied over to the new PC. I used a USB "flash drive" and copied the files to the drive from the old PC and then connected the drive to the new PC and copied the files over.

There were a couple of programs that I also installed for him. That was all he needed from the old PC.

We also dumped the 60 day Norton trial and installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and got rid of some "crapware" that was load by HP on the new laptop.
