I have a 1980 D-60 Dobro and I've found in a drawer a McIntyre pick-up that used to be in one of my Martins.
The p/u is a sort of contact mic affair that was simply stuck under the top of the 000-18 - can anyone tell me if it'd be suitable for my Dobro and, if so, where should it be fitted for the best results? _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

If it's one of these pickups, it should be attached directly to the cone, preferably close to the screw. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

If it was of the early McIntyres thy were attached to the underside of the spider using silicon putty.
The later "feather" style attached to the cone.
By today's standards neither is actually great. I did prefer the older style though.

Roger you would be better to pursue the JD Fishman saddle pickup -- it is light years ahead when it comes to amplifying a Reso guitar - and retaining the sound we all love. You can also play loud without feedback issues - most of the older pickup systems are poor by comparison. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Thanks for all the replies and advice. It was just that I'd found this McIntyre and wondered if I could find a use for it. I guess I may have to bite the bullet and spend more than I'd planned. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I'm pretty sure that all of the McIntryes used the same piezo element. Without the coverplate mounted you can try to attach it to the underside of the spider, letting the leads dangle outside the top. Hook it up to a suitable preamp/acoustic guitar amp and check it out.
It might well work for your application.

yeah.. i'd try it before getting something else. i use the crappy lace sensor dobro pickup and it works for occassional dobro input. of course, i'm no jerry douglesby. |
