early George Jones steel player?

Post by Mike Christensen »

Was watching a Wilburn Brothers show the other day, George was a guest,a very young George. The steel player played a D-10 Sho-Bud and was very good. Sort of looked like it may have been John Hughey. Any one know who George used in the early days? Mike C

In that particular video, I believe that is Hal. Shame they didn't get the face.

In the Hee Haw vid from the same era, same song, it's with the band, so that must be Sonny Curtis. Charlie Carter doing lead duty.

Jones says in his book that Hal did work for him at one time, after his first steel player left. Weldon was up for the gig, too, but the uniform fit Hal.

Agreed, you can tell it's Hal from the guitar, the sound, the shirt and the fact that he's using his first finger and thumb.

That happened more than once, lol!

Hey, Cal; I have a Tony Farr CD here that says he was a Jones boy for a while. When would that have been? Any idea?

Yeah Mike, I've know that to happen with other artists, too. When I went to work for Faron I fit in Al Lewis' uniforms pretty well, so Faron saved some money there. I don't know about Tony being a Jones Boy. I'll ask Cunning Walterham the next time I see him, which should be pretty soon.

I'm not for sure but I believe we got most of our suits from "Hoot". Help me out Cal, they were left overs from the big stars. But they were custom made and that is all I'll say.

The original recorded version (George with Brenda Carter) features Sonny Curtis playing one of my all-time favorite solos.

There's Hoot Borden, bus driver for Ernest Tubb, and Hoot Hester, fiddle player. That's all I can say. Faron had several sets of Harvey Krantz uniforms for the band, but we quit wearing them sometime in the mid-80's. Don't know what happened to them.

Lloyd Green writes:
Stephen Gregory is correct. I played steel on the George Jones & Brenda Carter record, “Milwaukee, Here I Come”. We cut it in 1968 for Musicor Records at Columbia Studio “B” (the Quonset Hut). It was incorrectly attributed by an earlier poster.

Jones steeler

Post by Tony Farr »

Hi Micheal, yes I was asteeler for Jones back in the early 60's, around 61-63. My steel was stolen at panther hall in Ft Worth while I was with Jones. The same time that his guitar was stolen. He got his guitar back but I never got my Fender 1000 or amp back.
