Anyone using a Fender Bassman for pedal steel? How do you like it? And what about the EQ section, low and high only, is that a problem?

I've used one before, and I find that there is not really enough clean headroom for live use. Its got a similar EQ section to other fender amps of the period, only with a fixed mid range. You can change values inside to move that mid range around, but there is no control on the front for it.

Also, there is no reverb on the bassman which you may want to make a note of

I tried my old white bassman head into a JBL D130 with a little digital reverb and it sounded great! The JBL is a very efficient speaker but I doubt it would have been effective outside my music room or a studio. It's probably roughly comparable in power to the old Standel amps guys used to get away with but volume levels are considerably higher these days, IMHO.

There are at least four distinct categories of amp described by the term "Fender Bassman," with four different degrees of utility as a steel amp. A combo, solid state "Bassman 100" would likely be pretty marginal for steel, while a Silverface '70's "Bassman 100" head might be nearly as good as it gets. The Tweed reissue would likely be OK at low stage volumes.

I have a RI Bassman not the LTD and had Bob Metzger tweak it for 6 string. He added a bias pot and a tube rectifier and now it only puts out about 33 watts. Not nearly enough headroom for Psg but it really screams when playing Lap Steel through it. I put a Dumkudo overdrive in front of it and it sounds wonderful.

I have an early 80's Bassman 70 (ultralinear) that works well for steel combined with my 15" JBL.

Very Happy

Love hearing good thoughts about the silver face Bassman 100 head...I just got one myself and it seems great for pedal steel and I haven't even got an appropriate speaker/cab to put it through yet!!

Which bassman?

I had a '65 that sounded ok in the studio but way unerpowered for a clean country sound on gigs. I used mine for a while with a Nvl112. That sounded ok but the closed back 2x12 cab didn't really work and was just too big & heavy.

[quote="Larry Bell"]Which bassman?

A 1978 silverface.

I have a Eminence EPS15 cabinet in need of a head that gives me good tube tone. I just want good tone; I don't play with loud bands, and don't need to peel paint. I know that I will need to use a reverb pedal. Was mainly wondering about the EQ section, and the fact that most PSG amps let you cut or scoop out the mid frequencies.

And what did it sound like? Use your ears to answer your question. Nobody else can tell you. No big deal to use a graphic eq onstage if needed.
