You may know about the scam that was tried on us tonight, but in case you aren't familiar with it, I thought it might be a good idea to post this.

We received a collect call purportedly from a young man in Miami who had been in a car accident and had been arrested for a suspended license. He asked us to notify his dad, whom he couldn't call collect through the company his dad works for. He gave us a phone number that started with a "star" and was longer than 10 digits. We suspected a scam, so we called the telephone company. They said that if we called the number he gave us, it would give him access to our phone number so that he could place long distance calls that would be charged to us.

If anyone you don't know tries to call you collect, refuse the call. And by no means ever dial such a number as the one they asked us to call.

I had heard about this scam before, but had forgotten about it -- until they tried in on us.

Roy,
We also received the call on an unlisted number. When it said "Miami-Dade Correctional Facility" we immediately hung up.
I had heard of this scam also.

It is interesting that under our "Correctional System" the criminals can continue to commit crimes while in prison.

I got a call at my store last week stating, "AT&T operator # so and so.I HAVE A RELAY CALL FOR YOU".I ask her from who? She repeated the statment again and refused to answer my question so I hung up the phone. The same woman called me three times that day.Later in the day a man called and tried the same thing wanting me to take a relay call.I told him that I'd had that call three time already and for "YOU PECKER WOODS LEAVE ME ALONE".I've not heard from them anymore.
