What's the story or general opinion on emmons D12 push-pulls? More than what is ever needed? Too heavy? Curiousities? All of the above?
Or are they somewhat regarded as a practical steel?
Thanks. |

Depends what you want. If you are after some additional strings for extended tunings or 2 universals (9th and 6th based), then the Emmons Push/Pull is a great guitar if it is set up properly by someone who knows what they are doing.
Too heavy, you ask? Depends on how much you are willing or capable of lifting. They are very heavy, but to me it would be worth it if it was the guitar I really wanted to play. Back in the day, those of us with Zb's, Sho~Bud's, Emmons', MSA's and others were carrying around 70 to 80 pound guitars (of course we were much younger). I would do it today too, bad back and all.
You will get many different opinions here. I wouldn't mind having one. I've read a lot of posts, here on the Forum, where the opinion was, the D-10s sound better than the D-12 guitars. I have a couple D-11, on a D-10 body, Emmons guitars, one of which is a Wraparound, and I'd like to hear a guitar that sounds better than this one does.

Chas, do you know if that was a common thing for Emmons to do? I mean putting 11 strings on a D10 cabinet? I guess they could do that with 12's too. |

Was the pedal rack standard or did somebody put black mica on it? _________________ '10 Williams 700 Series SD10 4+5/ '71 Emmons S-10 3+4/ '73 Emmons D-10 8+4/ GK MB 200/ Custom Tommy Huff Cabinets/ Webb 614-E/ Steelseat.com Pak-a-seat/ Magnatone and Fender lap steels/ Cobra Coil bars & Strings/ pod 2.0/ Peterson Tuners/Goodrich V.P./ Boss RV5/Teles and Martins

Jerry, no. There are 2 Emmons D-11 guitars, a cut-tail and a wraparound. The wrap is out in the studio. When I record tonal things, the wrap and my D-12 Cadillac non-pedal(a heavily modified Dekley with a 7-string bass neck) are the "working" guitars. The cut-tail rests in its case, in the office. I played it out, 20 years ago, but it has a narrower string spacing and I'm pretty clumsy with the finger picks, so I try not to play anything that makes me sound worse.
Kirk, the pedal rack is original, but apparently Bill Echols, the previous owner, added the Emmons hood ornament over the original decal (this guitar was built Feb 1965). I had to completely rebuild this guitar and when I was looking at replacing it, it didn't look like a simple task, also, when this guitar turned up on e-bay, the Forumites didn't bid on it because they thought it was a fraud and I got it. So now, that emblem has a special meaning for me. |

I got to hear Chas play his 65 Wraparound 2 yrs ago at the LA Pearl jamb and the tone blew me away. There were also 3 other PP set up next to his. JD was there and he agreed with me and said that he was trying to get Chas to sell it to him. I want one of those BAAAAAAAD! PPs _________________ 78 Emmons PP,Great tone.82 Emmons SKH #56 |
