It looks like I might have the chance to buy an Emmons Student Model S10 with 4 knee pedals. However, the person selling it is out of town for a while so I've been doing some research.

I've seen the term "push/pull" quite often here, but it hasn't meant much to me. My S6 has an all-pull changer and the only advantage that I've read about is that I can raise a string a full tone and use another lever to lower/raise the same string again. That makes sense. Is there any other reason with push/pulls are a thing of the past? Do the pedals feel different? Loose, stiff, etc? Do they stay in tune well?

I've read that it's not for someone who's inexperienced because of maintenance. However, I can't find specifics on the subject. Also, the person who might be selling it is local, trusted and very knowledgeable. I can expect it to be set up well.

I've read that tone is the big plus for P/P models, and that the Emmons Student is no exception. Any other plusses?

Get in touch with Lynn Stafford.....he's in your area.He knows everything you're asking about push pulls.Search for some of his posts on the Forum (mainly the Pedal Steel section probably) and you'll find pics of push pulls that he had refinished and then he rebuilt.

He's the push pull guy on your side of the good old USA!

Lynn is a straight shooter and a fabulous resource. He plays OK too! I wouldn't dream of buying an Emmons anything before talking to him.

Don't tell him I said anything nice.

If it is a decent price, buy it. Wonderful tone and really not hard to work on. If it hasn't been molested it probably plays fine anyway. Adjusting the mechanism is not rocket science, and it is all well documented. Look on the Carter website for basic instructions. If you can use some basic hand tools and follow directions you can adjust it to play nicely, and once adjusted it will stay put.

Thanks you for your very kind words Mike and Ken. James and I are now in touch and I'll help him as much as I can. Doug is correct in his statements about the student model Emmons guitars, or all push/pulls for that matter...
