I have been using PV 112E's in stereo for a couple years now and they do sound great but it seems that something is missing. Specifically in the lower and mids register. I like to have tight sounding low's and those growling mids. I'm playing a pushpull by the way with great sustain.
What are some other speakers that might be better. I thought about trying PV 115E's but I don't know.
What do you think? |

There's a real nice JBL K130 for sale on the forum right now for dirt cheap. Best speaker for steel in a lot of peoples opinion.
The new Eminence steel speaker is really good too, and very affordable from Keven Hatton. |

I don't know what speakers Peavey puts in those cabinets of yours, but I bet they were designed for guitar, not steel. I sure like the sound of a Peavey Black Widow 1501 SB (shallow basket) 4ohm. It was made for steel and it sounds great with an Emmons push-pull (with the right amp head, of course). |

VB 12s eminence raw speaker from TC Furlong is the best ones i've ever used, and they are neo speakers, less weight, 300watt 8ohm designed for steel guitar, this is the speaker Paul F and Randy Beavers is using last i heard, something to consider

Hi Ben
One thing that really needs to be taken into consideration when choosing replacement speakers is, what are you driving the speakers with and what will match up, ohm and power wise. I am the fellow with the K 130 for sale on the forum but this reply has nothing to do with that.
I also play Emmons PP's and I have tried many different amp and speaker combinations over the years.
I eventually went into rack setups with Revelation preamps, Mosvalve 500 power amps and speaker cabinets and thats when I experimented most with different speakers. I used 1501-4 BW's for a while but then moved on to the K 130 JBL's as they just had a sweeter and warmer sound. Both speakers sounded fine but it was just my preference as to "warmth" in the final sound.
As known by many, a Mosvalve 500 power amp is not light so I eventually sold the 500's and cabinets and started using TC Furlong's splits. I have both 15" and 12" splits. The 12" splits are the warmest of the two but the 15" projects better, especially when using just one split. I recently started trying out one of the new Eminence EPS 15" speakers in my 15" split and it sounds really good. Its kind of "middle of the road" sound wise between the BW and K 130.
If you want a warmer sound than what the 1501-4 BW offers, the 15" EPS is a good way to go if your power amp / head setup can match up with a 4 ohm speaker. ( they are only made in 4 ohm )
Other than that, here might be another solution. You are already using 112 E cabinets. You might check with TC Furlong to see if he would sell you a pair of the new 12" Eminence special design speakers that he is installing in his new VB 12 splits. They are super nice speakers. These are only made as 8 ohm speakers. I am using them in my 12 " splits with great results.
The above is about the best I can offer as to my experimenting. I only play out lightly anymore but my usual setup is a Revelation preamp with two 12" splits for some jobs or a Revelation and single 15" split for quick setup and less pieces on others.
The very best "well rounded" sound that I have ever acheived out of the above equipment, is using one 12" and one 15" split in stereo. It solves the age old question of which is better, 12" or 15" speakers.

I'll go with Ray's suggestion about trying another type of 12" if you're not happy with the ones you have. The NV112E's came from PV loaded with paper cone 1203-4 speakers designed for steel guitar. I have some of those speakers and some of the earlier 1201-8 alum capped 12's. For my money, either one of those is hard to beat for steel guitar.
From your initial post, I think 15's would be counter productive to what you are trying to achieve.
They would give you a bigger bottom end, but not a tighter one.
Perhaps a Weber model, a JBL D or K120, the speakers in the TC cabs or perhaps see if you can find out what they are using in the Little Walter amps as well as inquire of Ken Fox for his recommendations.
Maybe Paul Franklin or some of the other players around Nashville will have some suggestions. Jonathan Culifer uses 12's too, and several others.
The speaker is only one part of the equation though. A speaker may behave differently depending on the type of amplifier, preamp, etc.
BTW, Stevie Ray Vaughn was known to run his Strats through a Fender Vibroverb with a K130 like the one Ray has for sale, so....whatever works. |
