First of all, welcome to the zany world of "The Steel Guitar Forum".

Well Mike, you might start wanna start off w/ a good quality steel. May I suggest a "Franklin". ( )
Seriously, although Franklin is an excellent choice,it would be a bit pricey for a beginner. You might wanna surf the "Instruments for sale" page here on the forum. You'll find a lotta good deals here. If you need any advice on anything here, the forum is a virtual plethora of information. My advice would be,go to the "menu" page,& start surfing each one. Some will interest you, some won't. Then, you can make your choices.

BTW,I was born & (half) raised just West of you,in Springfield,Ma.

Mike ,Welcome to the Forum and you are just a few miles from a lot of great players in Mass. For teaching help let me recommend Doug Beaumier who resides in the Northhampton area ( teaches at Downtown Sounds or can be reach right here on the Forum)and has a list also of just about every steeler in Mass and N E. in general. Also there is Frankie Caruso who lives in West Newton and puts on a great steel show once a year in OCT.You might want to find out about the Steel shows in your area,Conn has the yearly big one that features the greats from the Area and also Nashville along with the Mfgs of most of the Instruments.Rhode Island has a show each year.I'd also highly suggest Jerry Fessenden Owner/ builder of the Fessenden Steel Guitar co in New Hampshire.Jerry would go way out of his way to help you.All show information is readily available on the Forum. Also Hi to Ron Comtois,Long time no see.Ron is an excellant player.New York,New England has produced many greats of the instrument.Smiley Who?
