We were lucky enough to flag down Terry on his way home from Mesa, Arizona Tuesday night. Terry stopped by Ron Sodo's house, and six Albuquerque steel pickers were able to see first hand, the talent Terry has. This was a great experience for all who attended. Thank you Terry, and Ron for hosting this event.

Terry really wails on steel -- and he's a nice guy to boot -- one of my favorites. If you don't have his "If We Could" album, get it and hear some fantasiic steel playing.

This was a great experience. Besides great playing, Terry has a great deal of experience and wisdom about the instrument and the business. He made everybody feel at ease. Thank you Terry for an inspirational evening and thank you Ron for being such an excellent host.

The thanx goes from me to you Terry. You have inspired me more than anyone could imagine. I raced home on Tuesday from my day gig to practice off of the video tape I have of you. Some of the lyrical voicings you use when you add those lower tones are just so beautiful. I cain't get enuff. Anyway I sent you an email with a link to a audio clip of you in my living room. I really need to know the name of the tune. <A HREF ="http://www.nmia.com/~ronsodos/steel.htm">Click Here</a> ................ Image

Ron,
Even though the clip didn't come through good on my old computer, The name of the song is,
"When They Ring Those Golden Bells For You And Me".
It is one of the tunes I am working up for my new CD. I hope by June I can have it finished. The engineer that recorded my "If We Could" CD is opening up a new studio, and He will be recording my new one. The "If We could" CD was done at the Mel Tillis Studio when he still had his theater.
Thanks again for getting everybody together for the seminar. It was great fun for me.
Pat is finally getting over the trip. All in all she did great.
By the way that song is in the key of "D"

That is a beautiful tune. I have been working on it. I can't figure how you lay the bar back down to a d chord while strings are ringing? Magic! Also I have a question. On "We Could" just before each modulation you use a passing chord that has this sweeping sound. I think it is a 7th chord. Is that your 4th pedal lower of the B down to A?
I am thrilled that you will put out another CD........................ Image

Ron,
The lick you are referring to is indeed a 7th. It is not that hard to play, and it involves 3 pedals. # 1 # 2 and the LKR that lowers 2 a 1/2 tone and lowers 6 a whole tone. Let me think about how to explain it without using tab and I will put it in writing here. I'll have to think about it first.

Here Goes Ron,
I use the Emmons set up on the floor. Second string tuned to "D".
Going from the key of "D" to "F".
The mod goes from "D" to a "C" chord and you start the lick from there.
Strings 5 and 6, 1st fret B pedal down. Slide to the 3rd fret, pick the strings again,(B pedal down, bring in the A pedal), while these are sustaining pick the 2nd string ,let the B pedal off , pick string 4, next pick string 1, start lowering the 6th string and letting off of your A pedal bring the 6th string split in, (pedal B and lower the 6th), pick the 3rd string (it will be a C note), the step just before should be finished.
I hope you can follow this. It sounds complicated, but when you bring everything in on time it isn't. You wind up with a nice 7th chord with a 6th in the middle(sort of).

Let me know how it works for you,

Thanx Terry,
I'm gonna try it. I'll let you know if I can get it to sound good. It does sound a little complicated but I am determined. I can't thank you enough for all your help. I have been working a lot with 2 different bands. Everbody is complimenting me saying my playing is getting sweeter and more interesting. The cool thing is that in the compliments I am getting I am being told that my playing is more lyrical I am not overplaying as much. It is interesting to me that even though in my mind the pedal combinations are way more complicated, out front and to the vocalists the melodic development sounds sweeter and less confusing. I am in your debt!..........Ron S......... Image<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Ron Sodos on 27 January 2005 at 02:26 PM.]</p></FONT>
