I tabbed out the intro to Pride of Cucamonga from the Mars Hotel album (Grateful Dead) and wonder if anyone out there can give some help with the intro to Dire Wolf from Workingman's Dead. Not quite able to get the sound. Thanks!

Brad gave the link to the solo, but for the intro to Dire Wolf, it's all about stepping on the BC pedals. And lots of blocking.
Going off memory, here are the positions. Song in in the key of 'A': it starts on the 'V' chord (E), fret 12, and then steps on BC-pedals and releases them.
Then slides down to 10th fret and repeats that BC-pedal pump move.
Then, it goes up to the pedals-down 'I' chord position (12th fret) and does a typical "step on A-pedal while holding B-pedal" lick.
Then slides up to 17th fret; starts with BC pedals down and then releases them.
Finally, slides down to the 12th fret; starts with BC pedals down and then releases them.
Hopefully, you can figure out the picking pattern on your own. Most of it has you hitting strings 3 and 4 together as part of the main melody.
On the first two chords, you hit strings 3-4 together and then hit 6 with the thumb, then quickly pick 4-5 together, followed by 3-4, step on BC, pick 3-4 again and release BC. Rhythmically, you have to make it swing with that rolling pattern... |

Thanks Tucker, that was a big help & sounds right. Still having some trouble getting the feel but that's probably due to experience (or lack thereof
