Here's something I just found on YouTube. A version of "Caravan" reportedly recorded during a Ferlin Husky session, with Curly Chalker on steel. The other players are not i.d.'d. An insight into how broadly capable these "country" players really were/are.

Seems like a good guess to me. He certainly had the chops and the jazz sensibility. |

This is a gem.
If the recording date is 1965 – it’s not Hank Garland whose car crash is September, 1961. The consensus here is its Phil Baugh and that it was recorded at Capitol in Hollywood – but I’m still checking.
"Travis" (Capitol ST - 1664) was recorded at Capitol and released in 1962. Chalker moved to Nashville from Vegas in 1966. On "Caravan" you can hear how he would have fitted right in with a ‘40’s –'50's swing band.
Both Hank Garland & Curly Chalker are still with us. |

The guitar style and tone screams out Phil Baugh.

That certainly makes sense. Thanks, guys! So would Curly have still been playing a Fender then, which would make it all the more impressive? |

Peter, it doens't really sound like Curly most of the time. There are some similarities in places, but there are some licks that sound foreign to his style. Just my Sunday afternoon two cents worth. Great post and you have a talent (among many others) of finding the hidden treasures. You are good, thanks. |
