I am a PSG beginner, trying to learn some basic chords on the E9th. When I tried to play a dominant 7th chord with the LKR, it did not lower my 8th string. However, I noticed that it did lower my 4th string . My question is how would I connect the LKR to the 8th string so it could be lowered? I have not done anything to the PSG since I got it new last year and was wondering why it was not connected? Thank you for any help. Rick

Rick, I see from your signature that you have an MSA Legend D-10 so I assume that's the guitar you're referring to......

First off....sit behind your guitar and activate the LKR lever. While you're doing that, look at the right endplate where the tuning of the pedals is done. You should be able to see one or more of the nylon tuners moving in and out. See if there's one moving for the 8th string. If it's there (and moving) it's probably not tuned. Get your tuning wrench and tighten it up until it starts lowering your 8th string. If there's no tuning nut for that string then you might have to obtain and install a rod for that string.....JH in Va.

Yes, it is an MSA D-10 Legend. There is a tuning nut for the 8th string LKR that moves ,but when I try and tune it, there is no change in pitch.

If it's fairly new, why not contact MSA?

Place the guitar in the case as you would if you were going to disassemble it, then activate the knee lever with your hand and observe what is occuring (or not). Since nothing changes when you tighten the tuning nut, it is possible that the rod has come loose or was disconnected from the bellcrank (the piece on the crossrod that the rods connect to). If so, back off the nylon tuning nut before reconnecting and leave a SLIGHT amount of play in the rod.

Also check that the split tuning screw is not out of adjustment, you will need a bit of space between the finger and the screw to allow it to lower, just a thought.

I am not mechanically inclined and when I took up PSG, I knew I would have to be at some point. Well, here is that point. I think I have to put my playing on hold a little(unfortunately)until I can figure out what is what in terms of parts and how things work. Until I can do that, I will not be able to make use of the post you guys made for suggestions.

Wow Rick, an MSA Legend is too beautiful of a guitar to not play. MSA's have always had excellent mechanics, so troubleshooting the problem is not that hard. I encourage you to give Dave's above suggestion a try.

It might not even be a problem. Some setups do not use that change, though most do. If you need to add the change you'd want to hire an expert, given your admitted lack of mechanical skill. However, if it exists, you'll be able to fix it, with a little advice from the folks here.

Rick, the GaSGA is having a Peach Jam on November 6th. (see post in "Events"). There will be players there that can take a look at what's going on (or not going on) and give you some excellent info to get your problem corrected.

I got the 8th string to lower with the LKR. I did not screw the tuning nut all the way. Embarassed I noticed the rod underneath was loose and the nylon hex nut was sticking out farther than the rest. At first, I did not turn it far enough when I noticed there was no change in pitch because I was afraid if I kept turning it , it would strip or mess it up somehow. Thank you guys for helping me troubleshoot that issue. I am happy and will go back to working on some E lever stuff. Smile
